Do you have a pet? What is it? Is it a dog, cat, hamster etc? Well we need to do some research, would you be ok if I take your animal to do some testing on it? No? I didn’t think so. Would it make a difference to you if it was not your pet and just another animal? To me an animal is an animal and to do testing on an animal is unethical and just not right. One test that wa sosne was mice were injected with urine. Some were injected with urine of pregnant women, others were injected with non-pregnant urine. In this paper I will explain to you why we should not use animals for testing in the biomedical field.

The first reason we shouldn’t use animals is because they don’t have the same organs. In the article titled “Reduction of Animal Sacrifice in Biomedical Science and Research through Alternative Design of Animal experiments'' by Ral Kaushik he says “It has already been proved by various meta-analyses that animals are not good models for human physiology.” (Kaushik) We know this because of a drug called Thalidomide. This drug caused babies to be born with birth defects and even death in some cases. This drug was tested on rats and passed the testing. We also have vaccines for HIV. This would be really exciting except we are human not rats. The HIV vaccine got approved for rat testing but has not succeeded with humans. Kaushik goes on to say “Unfortunately, animals and humans differ greatly biologically.” So why are we using them?

Adding onto us not being the same as animals I’m going to use another article titled “From Replica to Instruments: Animal models in Biomedical Research.” By Germain. He says “The surrogacy view implies that the laboratory animals (or parts thereof) are used instead of humans in experimental designs which are, in their respects roughly the same.”  (Germain pg. 115). If we are not the same of animals once again I ask why are we using them? Harming animals for our own good is not something I believe is ethical and should be put to a stop.

Kaushik says “annually around 115 million animals are used in various biomedical industries worldwide” and “Rats, mice and other rodents make up 95% of all animals used, and primates makeup one-third of one perecent of all animals used.” That is a lot of animals being used for our selfish reasons. The reason I say selfish is that some of the testing comes back to not even help us. Another article I used to do my research is titled “Drug Safety: An Arguement to Ban Animal Testing.” It is written by Stachura. He says “in fact, 95% of drugs that pass the animal testing stage are immediately discarded because they are useless or harmful to humans.” (Stachura)  To me it just sounds like we are wasting our time at this stage.

Moving on to a really good question you might have. What would we do if we don’t use animal testing? Well there are many ideas that scientists have come up with. I gathered these ideas from the same article I talked about earlier by Kaushik. He lists five different alternatives. I am going to tell you about two.

The first one is called “Silico Simulation and informatic.” Silico Simulation is a simulation used on the computer. Kaushik says “Simulations can reduce the number of experiments required” (Kaushik). With him saying this we can switch animals for computers and that will reduce or even take away animals used in experiments. He also says “Computational simulations and the number of animal sacrifices in drug discovery by narrowing down the potential drug candidates” (Kaushik) This is basically saying the same thing about the number of animals harmed will be greatly reduced. The next alternative is called “3D Cell-Culture Models and Organs-on-Clip.” with this he says “These are tissue models. They provide better control and they are faster than conventional experiments.” With him saying this it reminded me of what I talked about earlier about how a lot of the times the drugs get tossed after being tested on animals. He tells us these are faster and more accurate so to me it makes more sense to use these. These are just two ideas and I think these two are super good ideas.

After reading this what do you think on animal testing? I hope after you have read this you know that animal testing can be fatal to humans and over all just not the best idea. We have growing technology and we should be using that rather than using animals. I think since we have plenty of idea to replace animal testing we should start using those instead of harming animals for our own “benefits”.
