Why Haymitch Was A Splendid Teacher (The Hunger Games Book Analysis)

Intro Paragraph: A mentor is someone who will lead people in life, someone who people can depend on but at the same time make you an independent person. You must not question if they are there for you because you know they are there for you. A great mentor can communicate with their students. In the Hunger Games novel by Suzanne Collins, the world is a much different place than we are used to. Haymitch is a character in this book who shows exemplary characteristics of an exceptional mentor. He was able to communicate and connect with his students without physically being there because of the strong personality he had. Many of the gifts he had given were crucial for the victory of his students. Haymitch is immensely admirable at his job at teaching Katniss and Peeta seeing that he has won a game before and helped his students win one as well. 

BodY: With the knowledge, he has picked up along he can share it along with his students. He does a great job at sharing this knowledge with his students which keeps them alive in the games unassisted or unaccompanied by anyone else. “‘Whatever the stylists do to you, you shouldn't resist''(Collins 64) this is the one enormous reason why Katniss received so many sponsors. Without complaining about her outfit or stopping them from doing their work it was easier for the stylist to put on her costume and show her to the country. This ended up being extremely beneficial as sponsors were wowed by her dress, she immediately became the highlight of the hunger games. He had also told Katniss to avoid the cornucopia area after the gong sounds. She did as followed and ended up surviving the first night where almost 50% of the tributes had died. Overall the advice had helped her obtain sponsors as well as survive the first night. 

BOdY 2: One main way of giving advice is by communication but for you to understand the advice you need a connection. Haymitch was wonderful at sharing his thoughts, communicating with his students. His powerful, as well as calm personality, had a huge impact on how his word got past to his students. She could translate him from limited information‘“You’re supposed to be in love, sweetheart. The boy’s dying”. Give me something I can work with!”(Collins 248) Katniss was able to decode this message without physically talking to Haymitch. She was able to read what he was saying via her sponsors. This made the audience more intrigued by the Katniss Peeta love story. This presented the option for more funding to Peetas and Katniss's survival in the games. Altogether he showed great aspects of a mentor who knows how to connect with his students. 

BODY 3: Haymitch was very dependable during the games helping Katniss go on to achieve incredible feats. He gave Katniss many gifts which guaranteed her welfare for the duration of the games. She was badly burnt to almost a point of no recovery but was saved by Hamitchs well-timed supply package of some burn ointment. “I dip two fingers in the jar and gently spread the balm over my calf. The effect is almost magical, erasing the pain on contact, leaving a pleasant cooling sensation Behind”. (collins 180) 

The pain of the burn vanished when the balm was applied leaving a soothing sensation. The ointment had helped her continue in the games without the miserable agony of a burnt leg. Being dependable and there when Katniss needed him was a great show of his years of mentorship. Many other gifts were given such as food and some sleeping medicine for Peeta. The medicine was to keep Peeta asleep while Katniss fought for medicine to fix his broken leg. This medicine is the single reason why Peeta is alive. In all Haymitch was great at knowing when and how his students needed help. 

Conclusion: Haymitch can connect, teach and learn from his students. Haymitch is a great example of a valuable mentor to his students. His vast amounts of knowledge aid his students in succeeding in every criterion. He built strong relationships with his students that lasted while the game was in motion. His strong persona helped him communicate with his students without his presence in the area. He strategically sent gifts that assisted his students in survival all along in the games. With all he has done he still has much to work on. But he has improved as a person and a teacher so much along with the book. It almost makes you think if it's possible at all.
