Teachers make a difference. When a teacher is asked why they chose their career, that is usually the answer you hear. I am sure that there are other reasons as well, however, it can primarily be narrowed down to that one thing. A good educator can have a great impact on a child. While a not so great educator can have a bad impact on a child. Children spend a majority of their childhood at home or at school. That is why having good educators is an absolute necessity. Someday I hope to be a good educator that has a positive impact on students!

My name is Lauren Smith. I am a sophomore in college, however, this is my first year at UIS. I had never strongly considered becoming a teacher until this year. The pandemic put a lot of things in a whole new perspective. This career was one of the things put in a new perspective for me. The pandemic made me realize how desperately kids need an advocate in the classroom. The children need someone who not only teaches them what they need to know, but offers them love and a sense of belonging. E-learning was very hard for some students because their home environment did not consist of these things. There are already teachers out there that do these things everyday. I want to add to the number. I believe the more teachers out there that not only teach, but encourage, love, and care for the students, the better off we will be.

Throughout my K-12 schooling I had so many wonderful teachers. One teacher in particular stands out in my mind. She has made a lasting impact on my view of education. She was my High School band director. She believed in hard work and trying your best. She was not concerned with perfection, she just wanted whatever you would consider your absolute best. I really appreciated that as a student. I liked that there was room for growth, and that just because you did not do well the first time, did not mean that you could not or would not do well overall. The other thing I really liked about her as a teacher was that she was personable. She was able to maintain being a professional all while getting to know each one of us on a little bit deeper level. I again appreciated that, because it was easier to communicate and interact with someone you felt comfortable with. The final thing that stands out in my mind about her, is her passion for her job. She truly loves what she does, you can see it.

The K-12 teaching profession is very important. You are teaching kids the fundamentals they need and will need in their everyday lives. Things we all do daily without thinking about it, such as reading, was taught to us when we were in grade school. Another belief I hold about teaching is that summer is important. I know there are some teachers who wish there was no summer vacation, however, I disagree. Kids are only kids once, they should be allowed a break. A time for them to go outside and just have fun. Some teachers have even argued that students lose knowledge over the summer. If that is true, I wonder if they truly learned the subject matter in the first place. It has been 11 years since I first learned cursive in second grade. When I went to third grade the next fall, I still knew how to write in cursive, and I still know how today. That leads me to my other belief. Some schools no longer teach cursive in their school. I think that is wrong. What is a signature if all you can do is print? I feel like some schools are replacing basic common knowledge with higher level things that are not always necessary. I am not saying that it is bad to offer higher level classes or to teach such things. I just believe that it is very important to learn all of the basics first. I personally know some students that cannot tell time on an analog clock. They can only read a digital clock. Even though digital clocks are everywhere, is it wise to make children so dependent on technology, digital clocks, or calculators that they cannot figure out any process fully by themselves? I do not think that it is wise.

I am not sure exactly how my perspectives and biases may affect my teaching in the future. However, based on my beliefs listed in the paragraph above, there are some things I would do. For example if I taught 2nd or 3rd grade, and was allowed to, I would teach cursive. At the very least I would want my students to know how to sign their name. I would also place analog clocks in my classroom on purpose so that they would learn how to read one. At this time I am not sure of any other perspectives or biases I may take with me into the classroom.

In teaching today there is something called professional knowledge. Professional knowledge is something that is agreed upon by the professionals or teachers, and is used as a general base for their work. It is important that there are agreed upon teachings so that everyone receives the same knowledge or skill sets. There are skills for teachers as well. Teachers study theories and they research how to best teach students of different ages. They also take into consideration the different backgrounds of each student. These are professionally developed skills. The final thing teachers have are dispositions. Dispositions are beliefs or values that a teacher carries with them into the classroom. They could be things such as enthusiasm for teaching, belief that all students are capable of learning, or that a teacher values the many different ways kids can learn.

In conclusion, teaching is important. Teachers have a unique job where they can not only teach, but can encourage and care for their students. Being that light, a positive influence in a child’s life, might leave a lifelong impact. Beliefs held by teachers also make a difference. A teacher's values and professional skills all make a difference. Every student is unique and has a special skill set or ability, and the same goes for teachers. Every teacher is different, every teacher makes a difference.
