"To be, or not to be." - that is the inquiry passed over the lips of many actors playing Hamlet in the last four centuries on stage and screen. William Shakespeare, a British playwright, brought many far-reaching comedies and tragedies. In contrast, my three preview points to our question, "How is Shakespeare still relevant today?" he is a dramatist who created: Character portrayals, entertainment, and a unique linguistic standpoint.

Have you ever related to a character in a play before?

Shakespeare isn't only famous because of his plays, but instead because he was a master at imbuing his characters and stories with qualities and traits that made many of his plays feel vivid and alive. His plays have contributed to each character standing out amongst the crowd. For this reason, many successful plays by Shakespeare are relevant on a personal level to many audiences. Have you heard or seen Shakespeare's play, Hamlet? Hamlet goes through stages of agony, where grief has eaten up his heart because of his father's passing.

What about Romeo and Juliet? Enemies to lovers. "A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life" because of an ancient grudge. Lastly, Macbeth? A Scottish general who murders the king for power. Initially, Macbeth propels to arrogance, madness, and death. Does that feel relatable to you? Unquestionably, you have gone through stages where you have lost someone so dear to you, and you went through five stages of grief: Denial, anger, bargaining, and acceptance. Perhaps, a tragic breakup you've gone through and felt you couldn't live without your other half? Conceivably, you may have wanted to be better and acted out over-ambitious in a situation, resulting in guilt. Today, we humans can still relate to and have a relationship with character portrayals from four hundred years ago.

His leading characters' complexity and ability to turn a phrase inspire many modern directors to continually adapt his work for modern times. Any movie you turn on or book you pick up will undoubtedly have themes of love, death, rebirth, and power. How crazy is it that a dramatist from 400 years ago, where technology didn't even exist, can still have themes that relate to modern movies and books? For example, many current versions of "Romeo and Juliet" have been recreated over the last 70 years. RJ Baz modifies one famous recreated version of "Romeo and Juliet". The modern version includes guns rather than swords and cars instead of horses. Therefore, many contemporary directors are constantly adapting his work for modern times because of his timeless pieces' complexity and ability to turn a phrase.

Did you know that Shakespeare most likely coined terms that you use every day? Shakespeare brought roughly 1700 new words, concepts, and grammatical structures to the English language. Some of Shakespeare's language may appear antiquated to modern eyes, yet it was daring and forward in the Elizabethan era. Shakespeare's precise coining of words to depict previously inconceivable circumstances and happenings greatly enriched the English language.
