The concept of when life begins is a topic that has been ruthlessly fought over. What is usually left out of the conversation is how an unwanted pregnancy will affect a woman. A morally gray line is drawn by those plagued by hypocrisy. The removal of an unwanted fetus is suddenly more unethical than the death of the woman carrying it. I firmly believe that the health and the emotional well-being of the woman exceed those of an unborn fetus. Shockingly, this does not seem to be the case for 48% of the U.S. population. The usage of religion, personal morality, and the desire to control others have been turned into weapons to persecute women and to rob them of a human right.  Many of those who consider themselves to be pro-life fail to fully understand the concept of consent. No matter whether you are a fully grown person or an unborn fetus the concept still applies. Blood and organ donations are not mandatory even though these two items can save a life. They are part of another person's body and can not be given without explicit consent. This fact is entirely applicable to abortions. Consequently, this ideology relates to whether or not the fetus is “alive” at all. The bill, Abbott said at a signing ceremony, “ensures that the life of every unborn child who has a heartbeat will be saved from the ravages of abortion” quoted in 'Pro-Life'? What About the Life of the Woman? By Hesse. This quote pertains to the Heartbeat Act made active in Texas. In summary, it states that after a heartbeat is detected in a fetus abortion is no longer a viable option. The constant challenges to Roe vs. Wade have “kept women in numerous states from exercising control over their bodies” said in Congress Must Act to Protect Roe vs. Wade by LA Times. Aside from the doors closed for women by this appalling act, a heartbeat is not a feasible way to dictate whether something has cognitive capabilities. An unborn fetus is not yet a conscious being and if forced upon a non-consenting woman could ruin her life. Many people oppose the act of abortion and rather than letting the individual forced with the difficult decision choose what is best for them, I would prefer to have control over the choice of every woman in the U.S. Pro-lifer’s see abortion as “a failure for every woman” said by Karen Swallow in the New York Times. In-lieu-of providing free contraceptives, better sex education, and support for those facing the decision of an abortion, pro-lifer’s chose to shame women. Blinded by religious teachings or their concept of morality, those with this mindset refuse to take into consideration the circumstances of women and sometimes even young children who look for access to an abortion. It is beyond me how the blame always gets pitted against women. The supposed “mercy, justice, and love” preached by those who are pro-life cannot be sought after if it comes at the expense of women. Women are worthy and deserving of basic human rights. Stripping us of the right of abortion you also strip us away of our humanity. What is left is just an incubator forced to comply with those in charge of our bodies. It is of the utmost importance that lawmakers and citizens alike recognize the issues that the restriction of abortions will cause. A person’s personal belief is not and will never be enough to enact dominance over other people’s bodies. Whether someone chooses to have an abortion is up to the individual alone and not another person.
