Theme of Inhumanity in “Night”' by Elie Wiesel (Essay Example)
Most people have experienced one of the most chaotic and terrible days that you felt like sending everything. That one horrifying night could have turned your whole life around. The book “Night”' written by Elie Wiesel is about a Jewish boy from Romanian Elie. Elie and his family had been taken away to Auschwitz concentration camp when it would be the last time Elie would ever see his family. In the memoir, Night, by Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor constructs the theme of inhumanity, revealing the cruel and brutal impact it had on Holocaust victims, through the use of plot, irony, and conflict.
Elie Wiesel uses the plot To show the illegal and harmful actions the Germans and the SS soldiers have shown to the Jews. Elie Wiesel makes his point that when people are brutally treated and are consistently threatened with death threats and starvation and cruel behavior people lose their ability to act decently even toward people who are in the same situation. As empathy is one of the most exceptional of all human characteristics but can be crushed like a flower right then and there. Elie Wiesel employs irony to make you feel as if the reader were in the book, being tortured alongside the Jews. An example of irony can be dramatic irony when Madame Schachter screams Fire I see a fire.
“On the third night, as we were sleeping, some of us sitting,
huddled against each other, some of us standing, a piercing cry
broke the silence: "Fire! I see a fire! I see a fire!”There was a moment of panic. Who had screamed? It was Mrs.Schächter. Standing in the middle of the car, in the faint light filtering through the windows, she looked like a withered tree in a field of wheat. She was howling, pointing through the window: "Look! Look at this fire! This terrible fire! Have mercy on me!”(pg 24) So this shows dramatic irony because When the Jews were on the transports and Madame kept screaming that there was a fire it indicated the character's reactions and actions. Every time Madame kept screaming “Fire! I see a fire!” She was just trying to warn Jews that they were about to go through a ride to hell but the Jews all thought she was unbalanced and had a mental issue. This irony also shows how scared everyone could have been when Madame said she saw a fire and that the Jewish people heard it over and over that they were done with it because they knew what she was going to say and didn’t want to take that chance and prepare for it. Now, this may be a really big irony but another part of the book shows irony when the Jews first made it to the camp and how at the crematoria Elie witnessed babies getting thrown in the air and shot. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes. Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never. (pg 34) This paragraph shows irony because on this page it shows how phased elie was since he wasn't expecting to see infants being executed as they had a whole life upon them. Elie Wiesel felt disbelief and emotionless at the point knowing a lot of the readers probably thought that was going to be where every jew died.
