Have you wondered why so many different cultures and people ended up in Texas? Due to immigration, the culture in Texas has been changed in many ways. Immigration in the 1800’s from German’s, Czech’s, and Poles dramatically changed the culture and population of Texas. For this reason Texas is an interesting state.

Germans that came to Texas affected the culture in Texas in many ways. Germans came to Texas in the mid 1800s after a failed Revolution in Germany (Immigration To Texas- The Germans).  Germans coming to Texas were seeking new opportunities and a new life (Immigration To Texas- The Germans). The life of a German immigrant was hard (Immigration To Texas- The Germans). When a ship first came with immigrants, there was nothing ready for them (Immigration To Texas- The Germans).   They had no towns, food markets, and even people to help them learn about the culture and area in which they lived (Document A). Immigrants had to sleep in holes that they dug and eat fish and wild ducks (Immigration To Texas- The Germans).  Even though at first Germans had a hard life things quickly turned around (Immigration To Texas- The Germans). Germans helped contribute to Texas in many ways (Immigration To Texas- The Germans). They gave us the city of New Braunfels and all the towns around it (Immigration To Texas- The Germans).  Germans also brought traditions like the Christmas tree, Santa Clause, and the Easter bunny (Immigration To Texas- The Germans). Seeing that Germans gave and built cities and helped our economy the state of Texas has improved.  Germans were not the only Europeans coming to Texas, the Czechs came  as well.

As well as the Germans, the Czechs improved Texas.  The Czechs came to Texas for job opportunities, land, and because of a civil war (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs).  There was a long, hard 17 week journey to the Texas coast (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs). Immigrants would settle around Fayetteville, Coastal Prairie and Dallas (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs). Later some immigrants settled around Fort Bend (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs). The Czechs would mainly work on farms (Doc. B).  The Czechs were Catholics (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs).  According to the 1990 census about 282,000 to 1,000,000 people say they have Czech roots (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs). The Czechs contributed greatly to Texas by bringing food, dances, and musical instruments (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs). Food from the Czechs were sausage, sauerkraut, and kolaches (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs). The dance they brought was called the polka and their musical instruments were polkas and waltzes (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs).  The Czechs have a big celebration every year called the National Polka Festival (Immigration To Texas- The Czechs).  Since the Czechs immigrated to Texas the lifestyle has also improved.

Polish influence in the 1800s helped improve the culture and contributed to the Christianity religion in Texas.  Most of the Polish immigrants came because of sickness, famine, flooding, bad weather, and their hard life (“The Polish''). Also immigrants came because they had family in Texas and they wanted to join them (“The Polish''). A priest who came to Texas also encouraged them to move and made the town of Panna Maria for new immigrants (“The Polish''). Many settled in Texas around Yorktown, and San Antonio (“The Polish''). The Poles had great experiences with the Mexicans because they were also catholics (“The Polish'').  The poles contributed to Texas in many ways (“The Polish'').  The most important contribution is that they spread christianity throughout Texas (“The Polish'').  Also Poles gave food like sausage, a type of Stew, a cake served at Easter and cabbage roll (“The Polish''). The Polish gave many things to Texas, and the food they brought is greatly appreciated.

Due to immigration in the 1800s Texans now have a variety of different foods, traditions, and cultures. Horrible living conditions caused immigration from Germans, Czechs, and Poles. Now, because of immigration we know why we have different cultures and people in Texas.
