Essay Sample on Russia Ukraine Conflict

In 2013, the former President of Ukraine, Victor Yanukovych blocked several trades with the EU or known as the “greater integration”. Instead, Victor established better ties with Russia, resulting in mass protests across Ukraine, which eventually led to the removal of Victor from office. Conflict arose between Ukraine and Russia on February 20th, 2014. Before the conflict, Ukraine and Russia signed a friendship treaty on May 31st, 1997 and it expired on 31st of March, 2019. This conflict began when Russia annexed Crimea but the conflict had low tensions for 8 years. Ukraine was fighting an ongoing war, the war in Donbas. The war in Donbas is an armed conflict between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatist regions. Before Russia launched its invasion, it recognized sovereignty in the two pro-separatist regions, Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic. It signed a treaty, “Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance”. This treaty granted Russia permission to build military bases inside the regions. Russia began its invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, the most significant war since World War 2. This ongoing war has already caused the deaths of 24,000 people, 1.8k buildings destroyed, and $565 Billion in property damage. The United States has sanctioned Russia and the European Union and other countries have also sanctioned Russia. 

The United Nations launched two UN emergency appeals. This appeal calls for $1.7 billion for the people in Ukraine. The UN General Assembly also adopted a resolution that demanded Russia end its military operations in Ukraine. The United Nations held a vote for humanitarian consequences against Russia, titled “Draft resolution A/ES-11/L.2”. This resolution saw 140 votes in favor of it, but 5 countries voted against it, such as the Russian Federation, Belarus, DPRK, Eritrea, and Syria. 38 countries abstained during this vote.

Albania has unveiled sanctions against Russia and condemned them for their actions. In addition, Albania joined the UK and the EU to close all airspaces for aircraft in Russia. Our country also submitted a draft resolution to end Russia’s offense against their neighboring state. However, this was rejected by the Security Council and vetoed by the Russian federation. Our country wants to stabilize the situation and avoid war. Any actions will be used to ensure the safety of those in Ukraine and aggressive actions will only take place for countermeasures. We will launch transportation to Ukraine since people in Ukraine are struggling to escape. Our country is willing to take in refugees within our country. Poland is taking in over 2 million refugees from Ukraine. Other voluntary countries can also welcome refugees to release some stress in Poland. In addition, we will team up with an NGO called ‘Project CURE’. Project CURE is one of the world’s largest distributors of medical supplies. Albania will fund this NGO to support injured Ukrainians.
