Gender Equality Free Essay Sample

In the world today, great divides exist based on race, wealth, gender, religion, education and class. According to many researchers of societal issues, gender is the most basic and dominant category in human social life. 

Countless people since the past have been fighting for this issue but it is still evident today. One of the main categories where this is largely noticeable is the gender gap, when women, women of color, and people from the LGBTQ+ community are discriminated against and paid less than their male coworkers for having the same responsibilities for a job.

In this ever changing society where many claim that all are equal there are many problems that have been overlooked.

They say all are equal when 41 women CEO’s lead Fortune 500 companies today, but that is a mere 8% of women on the list (United Nations).They say all are equal when people from the LGBTQ+ community face constant discrimination and remarks in their workplace. They still say all are equal. 

It’s not our problem when we grew up thinking about all this, it's society’s. The things we were surrounded with, this isn’t a problem we face as we grow older. We have been facing this ever since we're little but it took a very long time to understand it. For example, when you are walking in the toy section of any store you can see the clear difference: girls usually have more dolls or “pink toys” and the boys section is filled with cars, robots and similar items. It’s what we grew up with and this needs to be changed. 

Many may think this is not a common issue, but as someone who has been through this it's terrible. I want to further my studies in STEM all of my STEM classes have always been majority boys and a handful of girls. When working on group projects I was always underestimated because of my gender.

This issue continues and progressively gets worse as we get older especially in the workforce. According to many studies and surveys conducted by multiple universities and organizations in the United States, men make instant decisions. People admire them and portray them as hardworking and dedicated but if the same decision is made by a woman suddenly they are aggressive and impulsive and are known to make rash decisions. Yes men are hardworking and dedicated but why do people’s views change when it comes to a woman or a person from the minority group. 

Many face discrimaiton in their day to day lives but from all the surveys, research and studies it shows women account for the majority of these claims and that's why we need to push this agenda more to empower women to achieve equality

Gender inequality has a long history. Women have been treated as inferior to men. They are consigned to performing domestic chores such as taking care of children. 

For example, The under-representation of men in the nursing career within the US and Canada illustrates an imbalance that should be addressed. Research from the University of Phoenix shows that the nursing profession has been widely considered as a women's career. There are stereotypes that have made it hard to have men joining this profession.

These stereotypes evident have continuously reduced the number of men joining the career. The Canadian and American nursing field is highly dominated by women due to the factors discussed above. The negative stereotypes need to be addressed if the number of men joining the career is expected to go high.

Further more women earn less even when they do the same kind of work as men. Bruckner (United Nations 2004) asserts that far less women own businesses compared to men and over 60% of all women who work in household businesses are not paid for their services.

It is a severe issue but can be fixed.

This can be achieved through education. This is the best possible option to begin with. As we start educating more people, we will need to be conscious of our unconscious biases and take all sides of the issue into consideration. This is not something that only women face but all genders, people and minorities. 

Although it is important for all genders to be permitted to choose what they want in life whether in their courses or careers, it is never sensible to assume in advance that the choices made will be or should be identical to what other members of the same gender are doing.
