Historical Essay Sample about King George III and Colonists

King George III was the King of England during the time of the Revolutionary War. His actions led the colonists' to seek independence.       

King George III began taxing the thirteen American colonies to pay off Britian’s debt. His parliament was called the British parliament. The Britsish parliament's first tax on the colonists was the Sugar Act then the Stamp Act. The Suagr Act puts a tax on sugar and molasses being imported into the colonies. The Stamp Act puts a tax on papers and official documents going to the American colonies. More taxes were passed like the Currency Act, Townshend Acts and the Quarting Act, but the Tea Act is what angered the wealthy colonists. The Tea Act was designed to save the British East India Company from bankruptcy. It placed a major tax on tea and made it where England could ship tea directly to the colonies. It stated in the article called, King George III & The American Revolution, “This was when Americans perceived that their rights were denied by not allowing American representation in the Parliament.” King George III's actions made the colonists feel they had no rights and their voices were not being heard. To fight back the colonists started boycotts, protests, riots and the Boston Tea Party. 

King George III's response to the colonists actions was to send British troops to restore order back in the colonies. What angered the colonists was they were forced to feed, house and take care of the British soldiers. In the streets of Boston kids began throwing stones and snowballs at the British troops. Eventually, an angry crowd of patriots formed. The British soldiers shot and killed some of the patriots rioting. The Boston Massacre made the colonists even more frustrated and inclined their desire for American independence. Different groups formed to give the colonies a voice like the Sons of Liberty and the Continental Congress. The Continental Congress appointed Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson was speaking for the colonists and how they are declaring independence. It stated in the article called, King George III, “Even the Declaration of Independence included no less than twenty-seven grievances addressed directly towards the King, showing how much he had become a symbol of tyranny to the colonists.” King George III's actions led the colonists to have to take control and declare independence.  

The American Revolution lasted eight years only because King George refused to surrender to the colonies. During the Revolution the King received help from other countries. It stated in the article, American Experience, “Early in 1776, King George consented to the hiring of thousands of Hessian mercenaries to assist the British troops already in America in crushing the rebellion.” He wanted to give the colonies no chance of winning the American Revolution.  

King George III felt the colonists owed the British crown. When the colonists fought back King George sent his British soldiers to restore peace between the colonies and England. During the Revolution, King Geroge hired mercenaries to fight with his troops. King Geroge III’s actions led the colonists to seek independence.
