Night by Elie Wiesel Religion Essay Example

Throughout the book Night, the thoughts of Wiesel and his religion change praising their god for everything. In the end, the reason is "Why, but why to bless Him?"(67). His ideas conclude with angry thoughts of why would they let mass graves under their faith. For the Jews, religion plays an important part in their lives. Since Wiesel was young he enjoyed going to their house praying and eating. His mentor Moshe help him with his religion and beliefs which had a big impact because it brought a sight of happiness and sane to have faith in something that would help in any action to protect the people who praise their god. These changes after the event of the Holocaust brought the sight of relevance and conclusion of his beliefs and what he was told before. His religion even though the gods do not answer their prayers of helping them form the ongoing torture. “Blessed be God's name...”(67). all that they have gone through with no help from the god that they praise they still participate in. At the beginning of the book, it states that Wiesel enjoyed going reading his prayers. Wiesel is a very deeply religious man. At which this point he saw that God did not help his family and friends. “He causes thousands of children to burn in His mass graves”(67). He also saw that human beings did not help, perhaps because they believed that God would help “I had never suspected that Yoss was religious”(71). I feel in this quote that they all lost hope and turn to God to help them. This is because they seem to think that there are no other choices to end all this torture. The hope that people that did not normally have anything in the faith of God and religion. They all lost hope and went to the things that they know will help them give hope and that was their religion. They start praising their God waiting for a positive answer for it to end. keep praying and praising their god “Blessed be the Almighty”(67). Wiesel knows that we cannot control God's actions, but we can control our actions. This says that even though he is a very religious man there are still some thoughts of what is real if he hasn't helped their people when they are more needed. “How could I say to Him: Blessed be Thou, Almighty”(67). Wiesel says that “who chose us among all nations to be tortured”(67). Wiesel acts as if there were no God when he is asked to help. He knew that God was not going to help with the German's actions, he sought to look at something else that would keep him sane. Throughout the book, he repeats to himself that in all of this, God must have a purpose for this doing. To answer the question of how God could let something like this would be based on the religion that I believe in also because there might be a chance that Weisel might have truth to when he says that God has created this torture for a purpose a reason to teach a lesson, creating a thought to help the mind keep sane and not lose hope in their religion of their God. The ongoing relationship between Wiesel and god had both up and downs because of the fact he had devotion and strength produced by the belief of God and his great impacts on his life that had brought many likings. In which the end he became cynical thinking that God was the only hope that it gave people from going insane over the torture that they were given. After the death of his father, he seems to have regretted the memorial of his religion because it gave him some sort of reliving of what was there or once there. In the end, his faith was being tested in the Holocaust because it was one of the most difficult events that happened, the loss of his mother and soon father with most of his siblings. He lost faith in anything good to become upon him and everyone else that has been impacted. Beliefs were not hard to fight until the event of the Holocaust.
