Racism and Innocence in To Kill A Mockingbird Essay Example

To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee and was published during the 11th of July in 1960. It is about a lawyer named Atticus Finch who defend a black person in Alabama, Tom Robinson, wrongly accused of rape by a white woman Mayella Ewell. He has two children: Jem and Scout. The children were curious about their neighbour the Radleys, specifically Boo Radley. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel showing the problem of racism and its devastating effect on innocence.

The main commendable aspect of the novel is that it showed the problem of racism and how it influences one's judgment. The narratives and the language used in the novel clearly shows the existence of racism. The audience can see the story through the eyes of a child, as the novel's narrator is a mere child, Scout. It is frustrating for the audience to see how people's judgement in the novel was influenced because of prejudice. The story might be so heartbreaking but it is a reality that's still happening. As said by David “To Kill a Mockingbird, is meaningful in every period and that today, Atticus Finch's message should be heard in the midst of all the global conflicts that we hear of on the news every night.” 

Furthermore, the children are a big part of the novel and it showed how how their innocence is being ruined as they were exposed to the happenings that took place. As said by the renowned writer, Tiffany Madison “No one loses their innocence. It is either taken or given away willingly.” And it is perfectly conveyed throughout the novel. There's no such thing as race, class, and other stuff that divides people in the society. For their eyes, people are of the same kind and level. It is a reminder that we were once a children and for that, we also know how we see the others, if that view will be retained a much better world could be attained. At the end, the novel To Kill a Mockingbird perfectly embarked lessons and realizations about the problem of racism.

Without a doubt, To Kill a Mockingbird is an amazing novel. Its enormous popularity can never be questioned. Reading the novel was an eye-opener and a life changing experience. It is highly recommended to read for anyone ranging from age ten and above.
