The Theme of Love in A Midsummer Night's Dream Essay Sample

Love is defined as a devotion you have towards someone along with a strong connection with that specific person. The complicated love between Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena relates to the main idea that love in this story between the four lovers is similar to love shown between teenagers today. Factors of the dynamics and jealousy are huge with this comparison and also come with the infatuation of love.

Jealousy is a very easy emotion that has been happening for centuries. Today, it is the most common emotion within teenagers that are in love. If a girl or boy  looks at someone’s boyfriend or girlfriend the wrong way this emotion comes out. Jealousy stirs up from insecurities built up inside. Just like with teens today this emotion also occurred in the story. In act one Helena shows jealousy towards Hermia because she has taken Demetrius away from her. She preaches, “O, teach me how you look, and with what art you sway the motion of Demetrius’ heart.” She is begging for answers and wondering what Hermia has that she does not because she is in love with him. 

Another reason they similarly compare is the dynamics of the four lovers and teenagers today. Today most teenage love revolves around loving blindly. Boys and girls go for the looks instead of truly getting to know each other. Demetrius and Lysander prove this. The romance is not genuine because of the love potion involved. Emotions are not reciprocated back to the girls and drives the lovers to feel desperate. Lysander says, “the course of true love never did run smooth.” Which in the dynamics of today and when this story took place is without a doubt the truth.

Overall, the complicated love that was proven with the factors that show that love when this story takes place and now is very similar.
