The British army was the greatest army in the world. So how on Earth were they defeated by a small group of people fighting for independence? Surely, the British had the upper hand. They had a great army, many resources, and even hired mercenaries to support them. Even though the British had the upper hand, the Patriots had their great leader, George Washington, had other countries and individuals helping them, and had a stronger drive.

George Washington was a peculiar man with many talents, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to see that he led the Patriots to victory. Washington already had information on the British from the French and Indian War. He analyzed their fighting strategies, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Washington used that information to lead the Continental Army. Although Washington wasn’t familiar with leading a large army, he still led his army to victory with persistence and determination. Unlike most generals, Washington stuck by his troops when things were hard. He continued to motivate his army even when soldiers were ill, hungry, and outright dying. His great leadership was one of the most notable reasons the Patriots were able to beat the British.

Next, the Patriots had outside countries and individuals to help them during the war. After their win in Saratoga, the Patriots gained many supporters who were fond of their persistence., including countries like Spain, Cuba and France. France was one of, if not, the biggest supporter of the American War for Independence. At first, instead of outright supporting the Patriots, the French sent materials and money to help the patriots cover for war expenses. But after the French got wind of the Patriot’s win at Saratoga, they decided to publicly support the Patriots. Many individuals helped the Patriots as well. Men such as Marquis de Laffayette, Friedrich Von Steuben, and Juan de Miralles believed in the Patriot cause and supported them in different ways. Foreigners from different countries came to the Americas and enlisted in their army to support them. Without help from other people, who knows how the war would have ended? Help from outside countries and individuals was one of the many reasons the Patriots were successful at gaining their independence.

Last but not least, the patriots had the advantage of fighting with greater determination. The Patriots weren’t fighting just to fight; they were fighting for their independence, freedom and rights. Their spirit of independence drove them to continue even when things were difficult and soldiers were dying. Their determination was so great that they influenced many others to implement that spirit into their own countries. Their principles of freedom and justice were also outlined in their Declaration of Independence. Their reason for fighting was the most important and greatest reason for winning.

In conclusion, even though the British had more advantages and assets than the Patriots, the Patriots still managed to win against them. The Patriots also had advantages that helped them win, the most notable ones would be their leader, George Washington, help from other countries and individuals, and their great determination. All of those reasons contributed to the Patriots winning the most iconic war in American history.
