Delilah's Character Analysis Essay Example

Delilah is a very interesting character to study because she is the reason for Samson’s demise. Before this class I had heard of the story of Samson and Delilah, and was very interested in her character because there is always a backstory to a “villain.” She was hired by the Philistine workers to find Samson’s weakness and advise them of it. We see big, strong, powerful Samson falling in love with Delilah. His hair was his weakness, but because of a woman his secret weakness was exposed. Samson would later die because of his tragic mistake. Unlike Jephthah, whose downfall was because he sacrificed his daughter, Samson's downfall was a woman. 

In the movie “Gone Girl” we also see the power of a woman in a different way. Amy Dunne, who is the main antagonist fakes her own disappearance to ruin her husband’s reputation for threatening a divorce. After being gone for ten months, and altering  her husband, Nick into a “so called” murderer, she comes back just to play the happy, loving wife all over again. From this wild example, we see how powerful a woman can be over a man.

A character that reminds me of Delilah is Katherine Pierce from the Vampire Diaries. Katherine Pierce was a powerful witch who turned herself into a vampire. After living many years, she met Stefan and Damon Salvatore, and without them knowing had relationships with both brothers. During the first few episodes we see Katherine as she leads both of the boys on, and they fall madly in love with her. Ultimately Katherine was only in love with Stefan, still leading Damon on. When she is found out to be a vampire she turns the brothers into vampires and flees. Hoping to see Katherine hundreds of years later, Damon goes back to the place Katherine turned him into a vampire. Although Katherine was not in love with him, she still had the power over him many years later. 

When I completed the book of Samson I still had questions about Delilah. I wondered what ever happened to her after Samson committed suicide? Did she die when the pillars came down? And was she in love with him? I wonder if it was hard for her to betray the man she loved? 

Delilah may not be the best person to look up to, but she is a  very fascinating person to learn about. When reading about her for the first time it can be pretty easy to look at the obvious. When you explore deeper you realize that Delilah can show how powerful women are, especially over men.
