Who was Russell Leuthold as a child? Russell loved to read and learn every single day as a child. He wasn’t always the loudest child in the room but when he had an opinion he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind. Russell loved to play outside in the open lot with the other children no matter what game it was. Russell Leuthold looks like a shy afraid kid on the outside but is a lot more than that.

When Russell was in elementary school one of his first memories was going to the school library during lunch. The first time he went to the library instead of lunch other kids asked him why weren’t you at lunch Russ. Russ responded by saying “I went to the library to read I found this really cool book.” His peers laughed at him and told him reading was for losers. Russ didn’t show emotions at the time but was sad inside. He wanted others to accept him but wanted to enjoy his passion for reading. When Russ got off the bus he ran into the house sobbing to his mother. His mother then asked him what was wrong. Russ responded with people were making fun of me for reading during lunch. His mother Sharon responded, “honey not many of your peers read. It’s okay to enjoy reading not everyone is going to like you”. After that day Russ didn’t let his peers ruin his passion and his reading paid off with the scores he got on reading assessments. He was consistently in one of the best reads in his class and didn’t look back.

Another one of Russ’s stories was when he got into a fight with Johnny Parker at recess. It was a normal day at Gatewood Elementary school until recess. Russell loved playing on the Jungle Gym. In the 1970s a Jungle Gym was a structure that had multiple boxes attached to each other. An individual could decide to climb up and down them in an fashion they wanted. Johnny was always a troublemaker in school and had previous caused problems with students. Johnny got beat with a pandle many times but didn’t learn any lessons. That day during recess Johnny pushed Russ off the jungle from the highest box. Russ fell and was feeling very upset. Johnny was laughing at Russ and making fun of him. Russ ran up to Johnny and pushed him squared in the face. He landed the punch but then Johnny swung back and a fight broke out. In the end Russ and Johnny fight was broken up by a teacher and both were sent the principal office. Both of the parents mothers came to the school to talk to the principal. The principal said that both of the children would have a two day out of school suspension. Russ felt that he let his mother down and shouldn’t of made that decision. On the car ride home everyone was silent and knew Russ was going to get into trouble. When they got home Sharon started to yell at Russ and told him this was a terrible choice and some choice have consequences. Russ was spanked three times and was told to stay in his room. Then Russ mostly for the next two days did a lot of cleaning around the house with his mother. That was his first and finally suspension in school.

My finally story of Russell Leuthold childhood is when him and his brother Kurt got into a fight. Kurt was Russ’s older brother by two years. Kurt was a senior in high school and didn’t want Russ to go to prom. Russ with a sophomore and got asked to go with a Junior. Kurt told Russ many times that he could not go with the girl. Two nights before prom Russ had enough of Kurt saying no so both of them got into a fight. Kurt and Russ got in many fights as they were growing up together but this one was different. In the end Kurt won the fight and Knocked out Russ cold. Kurt ened up having a great time at prom while russ didn’t know where he was. Sharon Russes and Kurts mother was very disappointed in both of them and took there car away for two weeks and made them bike to school. School is about five miles away from home so it was terrible for Russ to bike considering his biking skills.

To conclude many people thought Russ was a shy and insecure kid on the outside but was all more than that. Russ created many problems but he was a great student and kid. He always tried to do his best in school and sports. Russ was clearly not your average kid but as Russ always said why would you ever want to be average.
