Essay on Shakespeare's Use of Sadness, Comic Relief, and Grief

Shakespeare's tragedies are important to know because of the drama and suspense, according to Gale. There are elements that are helpful to knowing the genre. Some elements in Shakespearean Tragedies are sadness, comic relief, and grief.

Sadness is an important element in Shakespeare Tragedies during a character death or a somber scene. According to Romeo and Juliet, “Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say good night til it be morrow" (Shakespeare 91-92). The character is saying a farewell to her beloved, someone whom she cannot see every day. Scenes like this need comedy.

Comic relief is another element in Shakespearean Tragedies. It is to have a bit of comedy in the sad events taking place in the story. "How art thou out of breath when thou hast breath to say to me that thou art out of breath" (Shakespeare 126) is something Juliet says when one of the characters is taking too long to address their point. It adds a bit of laughter to the situation at that time.

"For never was a story for more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo" (Shakespeare 309-310) is the grief that goes with Shakespeare Tragedies. The two main characters died for each other which caused great sorrow for their families. The grief element in tragic stories leave an impact on the readers and their view on emotional scenes. 

In conclusion, elements in Shakespeare Tragedies are sadness, comic relief, and grief. Parting ways with people is sometimes not as happy. Comedy in emotional stories can lighten the mood up with laughter. A hurtful scene leaving the readers in tears is impactful and emotional. All of these elements can be in Shakespeare Tragedies.
