Essay Sample on China's One Child Policy

China’s One Child Policy was a bad idea. China’s population started to increase. 

This was because it decreased the birth and fertility rates. It also created a Negative Population and exerted too much government control in the People’s Republic of China. For these reasons it was a bad idea. 

The One Child Policy was presented to China in 1980 as stated in document B. The policy didn’t necessarily only mean one child. It basically meant you could only have one pregnancy. So if you got pregnant with twins then you could keep them. The only other option was if your child was born with a disability. They offered you a do over. The chances of multiples are always rare so with only having one child the number of children was low. This made the population decrease. In document A, the document tells us that in 2010 the population of China was 1.3 million. Today, the population is around 14 million. The One-Child Policy didn’t stop the population from rising.

Negative populations were created because China’s one child policy may have a fertility decline that was already well in progress. This being said, in document B, China has fewer young people living to take care of the elders. Since there weren't many younger people to take care of the older ones, many elders died. The policy wasn’t a good idea because it damaged fertility permanently and the population entirely. Henan was one of the most environmentally stressed areas of China. Henan last year became the first province in China to register its 100 millionth resident, giving it a population larger than any country in Europe. This proves that the policy stopped nothing.

Demographic growth means that population growth is the increase in the number of people in a population or dispersed group. So with the One-Child Policy you can see that it didn’t stop the population from rising. This information came from document C. In groups like singleton daughters, however, enjoy unprecedented parental support. They enjoy this because they do not have to compete with brothers for parental investment. In document F, Xiao Xuan tells us how it made her feel. She told us that it was terrible. She hated the fact that she had nobody to talk to. She also told us she would cut her wrist anytime her parents were to yell at her. She never knew how to act because she never got to talk and let loose. She’d keep it to herself. She tells us that the One-Child Policy was partially to blame for how she felt.

The One-Child Policy was a good idea in theory, but it was not executed well. The numbers continued to rise. In this case it exerted too much government control in the People’s Republic of China.
