Kids under the age of eighteen tend to get taken away from their biological parents due to multiple reasons, the parents abuse their child, they have an addiction of some sort, or they are not responsible enough to support their child's needs. When children get taken from their parents, Social Workers take any belonging they feel is essential like clothes, shoes, toiletries, a brush, socks, and underwear. The children are picked up by a social worker where ever they may be, at school, at their home, or at a friend's house. You are then taken to the Department of Human Resources where they call a range of foster parents. If they have less than six children in their home then they are allowed to bring you into their home. This is where you would stay until the judge says your parents are stable enough; if the judge declares they are not, then they may terminate the parent's rights. When their rights are revoked you are put up for adoption. Your foster parents may adopt you if they would like or other foster parents who are interested can. Adoption is when a foster family or relative chooses to bring up a child as their own.

I’m adopted and I personally think children who are adopted should not be able to contact their biological parents. This is because my parents are drug addicts and alcoholics. When I did have to contact my parents they would always apologize and say they would go to rehab and get me back. When they told me this I believed them, but I later found out they lied. When this occurred it was very bad for my mental health. I would lose sleep crying, I would have mood swings, I would not talk very much, or let anyone in. This was all because didn't know if I could trust anyone because my family betrayed me. To this day, I think about the misery they put me and my younger sisters through. In that situation, contacting my parents was not a very good idea.

While my personal story and opinion are in my specific situation that it would not have been in the best interest to have contact with my biological parents, I do believe that there are instances where contact would be appropriate. Growing up in foster care I have had the opportunity to spend time with other kids that are in the Foster Care system. We had two younger children that were in our house when I and one of my younger sisters got to our new parent's house. The reason that they were in foster care was that their mother had a mental problem. She could not mentally comprehend how to take care of her children. She did not have much of an education and turned to drugs and also a domestically violent relationship which then lead to her losing her children. In my opinion, as long as she was out of that relationship that was violent and was clean of all drugs then I do not see a problem with her having contact with her children. I believe that it would help the mother and the children if they had contact with each other.

As a child in the system, I heard about pregnant girls my age. Many girls including myself would not be able to physically or mentally handle having a child at our age for many reasons. One reason specifically would be the lack of a support system to help raise a child. The lack of a support system would lead to a loss of education and growth to have the ability to support a child. Furthermore, I feel that if a child were to be separated from its mother and adopted by another family, it would be in both of their best interests to keep in contact. Many girls end up in bad situations and make life-changing mistakes. However, just because they are young and cannot care for their child on their own does not mean that they should not have rights to their child at all.

In conclusion, I believe that there are a few reasons that adopted kids should and should not be able to keep in contact with their biological parents. Whether it’s because of drugs or child endangerment that keeps them away. Or it is the fact that they have a mental problem or are just really young and immature that they should keep in contact. I believe that every situation is different and should be considered with care to make sure that the children and the parents are stable.
