Globalization: A Closer Look Essay Example

The definition of globalization is a worldwide flow and integration of culture, media, and technology due to advances in communication systems and economic interests (Sociologydictionary.org, n.d.). Globalization is something that affects everyone and everything on a daily basis. Looking at the cultures that are happening all around the world is amazing. The way people are living today is affected by globalization because this intertwines with how individuals were raised and the lives they live today. There are many things out in the world today that have influence on the lives that are being lived, especially multinational companies such as Johnson and Johnson. 

Multinational companies are not all bad but may not be all good neither. A multinational corporation (MNC) has facilities and other assets in at least one country other than its home country. A multinational company generally has offices and/or factories in different countries and a centralized head office where they coordinate global management. (Chen, Scott, 2021). 

The Johnson and Johnson company is in that list labeled for being a multinational corporation. Johnson and Johnson are an American multinational corporation founded in 1886 that develops medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and consumer packaged goods. Due to global stratification (global stratification affects people’s local culture according to the wealth of the countries) the Johnson and Johnson company is in the wealthier parts of the country. Here in the United States, there are more of the COVID-19 vaccine, that this company had recently produced within this year because this country is able to afford it, unlike less fortunate ones who do not have that luxury. Some of the world’s nations are wealthy, others poor, and some in between (Henslin, 2017). This impacts the nation because more people are able to protect themselves from hopefully getting the COVID-19 virus. 

Moving on to global stratification part of this company, it has both positive and negative effects on the economy. Since global stratification is everywhere, when this vaccine came out the only people that were able to get the shot was higher ranked individuals. This alone affects culture because people are labeled as certain things, this vaccine was distributed to a triangle of people. First were healthcare professionals, then was the Navajo nation, after that was everyone else. So, this affected our locals and there were quite a few people upset. This in particular situation goes under the social stratification tab. Even so, it is important to emphasize that social stratification does not refer to individuals. It is a way of ranking large groups of people into a hierarchy according to their relative privileges (Henslin, 2017). this is a positive and a negative all in one. 

Nonetheless, global stratification means that more businesses in the United States produce goods at home that are exports to earn the country more foreign exchange. Expertise is also exported to the United States where the standards of living are further improving. However, the negative side of global stratification is that it having multinational companies influence individuals of all cultures. For example, the Johnson and Johnson company, everyone knows that they create baby goods and people thing that it is top notch without even looking at its competitor. 

While no one is really sure who the “big winner” is with the global satisfaction debate, it is safe to say that positives and negatives happen no matter what, it all depends on how you look at things and possibly what a person or family rank the people are living in. For the richer families, global stratification may not have any kind of effect on them. Conversely, the less fortunate people see all the affects. Johnson and Johnson are a multinational company who is striving to help people, this is a good thing.
