The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris shows the power of love and kindness and how it unifies people in tough situations. Through the actions of Lale, Heather Morris showed that love and kindness can go a long way for people in dire need of it, and can save people's lives, ultimately creating unity between them.

When Ivana asks Dana where Lale got the medicine for Gita's typhus, she responds with, “We don't need to know [where he got the medicine from]. Just be grateful that he did.” This shows how Ivana, Dana, and Lale unify together to help Gita because of their love for her, and that Ivana and Dana are extremely grateful for Lale's help, without caring how he got the medicine. As this is based on a true story, I think this is very powerful and thought-provoking as it shows that even in extremely risky and dangerous situations, people will still show bravery and come together to help the people that they love regardless of the costs. I think that Morris included this situation to show how influential love can be in situations of hardship, and how it can unify people together. As a teenager now, this is significant for me because in modern-day society many teenagers have mental health issues, so we all have to show love and unify together to help each other through the tough times.

After Lale was beaten up for trading jewelry for food to give to others, some other prisoners saw how weak he was and one said, “I got extra rations from [Lale] when I was in Block 6. He was always handing out food… He can’t make it to supper. I’ll bring him some of mine.” This shows that the kindness Lale has shown to others has been appreciated, and given back in his time of need. This is powerful to me as it portrays that when you need it most, many people will be there for you if you were there for them. Recently, this has been shown as many people have come together to support Ukraine in their current war with Russia. Countries have given supplies to Ukraine and many people have started movements and charities to support them, as they have done for us in the past. I think that Morris used this situation because she wants to show how small things can always make a difference and create unity between people.

Through The Tattooist of Auschwitz, I learned that when people are going through tough times, such as a concentration camp, love and kindness can always be found, and returned when you need it most. Morris shows, through Lale’s story, that if you can give kindness to others many of them will give it back to you, and how people can come together for the people they love. This makes me think about what I can do to help others in tough situations and to try and show love and kindness whenever I can.
