Maurice and Laura's friendship started when Laura had come across a young boy (Maurice) in the streets. It's amazing how they are still friends after fifteen years! It shows their true friendship when Maurice gives a speech at Laura's 50th birthday.

When the two friends were getting to know each other, Laura took Maurice out to lunch every day and introduced him to new things and new places. They influenced each other in ways that changed each other's perspectives on life. Laura says, "Whenever I hear someone tell me how lucky Maurice is to have met me, I have to stop them and correct them. The truth is that the lucky one is me," Their friendship lasted as long as it did because they needed each other.  They taught each other very valuable lessons that will last forever.

When comparing the two selections, it is obvious that they are connected. In the first selection A simple Act, Maurice is a young boy and Laura is younger herself. They meet when Laura sees Maurice in the streets. In the next selection, The Invisible Thread, it is obvious that the two friends are older. In the text it says, “He kissed his wife, walked up and took the microphone, and began his toast,” This proves that they are in a different time period then they were in the first selection. When you compare the two selections you can see that one of them is about the early stages of their long lasting friendship and the other one is about the later on life after 15 years of being friends.

The difference between the two selections is the point in time. Fifteen years did a lot to Maurice and Laura considering their accomplishments in life. Amazingly, their friendship lasts up until Laura's 50th birthday and continues after that. In the first selection, Maurice is a young boy who did not have a very loving life. One day, Maurice didn't even have to think about if someone cared about him ever again. Laura truly changed his life but that is just the beginning. In the second selection, it is them as older people who remember what happened that day as a memory. That is the difference between the two selections.

In conclusion, the friendship between the two people lasted as long as it did because of how they affected each other. When Maurice was on the street vs. him now it is very obvious that Laura made a huge difference and didn't do what she did for attention but did it to help Maurice. From the time they met to the time he gave his toast, their bond continued to grow as they grew older.
