Narrative Essay on In The Day I Saved a Life

In The Day I Saved a Life, Thomas approaches a fisherman that’s catching a shark, and tries to convince him to put the shark back and save the life of an almost extinct animal. On Thomas’s 11th birthday he and his family went to Venice beach. One day when they were leaving the beach,  a local told them about a pier nearby to watch the sunset from. So they headed there and watched the beautiful sunset. Then when they were ready to leave, Thomas“saw a fisherman pull a baby bonnethead shark up on his line.

He pulled him onto the pier, hooting and hollering about his catch and how he was “going to eat tonight.” That was a horrible scene for Thomas to see while leaving. Thomas loved sharks and it broke his heart when he saw a fisherman catching a shark, and preparing to eat it. Thomas knew he needed to do something about it so he decided to approach the fisherman and try to convince him to put the shark back.

Thomas explained to the fisherman “How sharks are keystone species and how they keep the ocean ecosystem in balance; (He) explained about their slow reproductive rate and how we needed every shark in the ocean to keep it healthy.” Thomas tried to convince the fisherman, and he was willing to do what he could to save the life of a shark. He even offered to buy the fisherman dinner. In the end it was worth it, because Thomas was able to convince the fisherman to put the shark back. That day changed Thomas forever and he began fighting for sharks rights.
