It’s March 27, 2022, at 8 pm your parents have just put on the channel ABC. You hear the renowned Oscar theme song. At this time, you have been watching the Oscars for a while and you start dozing off. Near the part where Chris Rock is giving out the Oscar for the best documentary, you close your eyes, and the last thing you hear is a G.I. Jane joke (Chris was making a joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada’s hairstyle).  Then seconds later you hear BAM! You wake up quick enough to see Will Smith slap Chris Rock then swear. Five minutes later Will gets the Best Actor Oscar and you become outraged and tell your parents” Will Smith needs his Oscar revoked here's why!”

My first reason is that it condones violence. Picture that you are the best football player in your school. You want to beat up a wimpy nerd because he tutored you and you got a B+ on your test. Everyone sees you beat him up, but instead of getting in trouble, you get a trophy. Most sane people would say “that's not fair.” In this situation, the child who beat up the nerd would have a punishment like being expelled. This is why they give punishment for hitting others, so the child won't think that this is an exceptional thing to do. If you just let it happen with no repercussions, you're saying it's fine and you should keep doing it. Will Smith may continue to hit people because the Academy has permitted him to do so.

My second reason is that he has already utilized violence in the past. Will was in Russia in May 2012, for the premiere of Men in Black III. Will was heading down the red carpet at the time. A man impersonating a reporter approached him and begged for a hug. Will nodded as the man went in for a hug and attempted to kiss him (on the lips).

Will slapped the man's cheek with the back of his hand, stunned, and yelled, "come on man, what's your problem?" "That man tried to kiss me on the lips," he later said. He then goes on to say, "He's lucky I don't sucker punch him," all while smiling. This is another time he had resolved to violence. What happens next,  does he hit someone else and gets away with it?  This brings me to my final point.

My final reason is that he is regarded as a hero by many children. Will Smith is the sixty-ninth highest-paid celebrity, earning $44.5 million in 2020.

As a result, you can infer that many children enjoy his films. According to the article, The Influence of Celebrities on Children's Upbringing, children in today's media look up to, and even become obsessed with, celebrities rather than their parents. Furthermore, 15.36 million Americans tuned in to watch the Oscars. At least a million children were watching. This means that if their idol strikes someone, they may strike someone as well.

"We don't think Will Smith's Oscar should be revoked," your parents say. Our first reason is that he did not use deception to win the Oscar. He had to work hard for that award; he had to wait 29 years for his first one. In any case, Chris Rock was telling a mean joke.

This brings us to the second reason. He was defending his wife. Whoopi Goldberg, a member of the Oscar team, has stated that his award will not be revoked for this reason.  You, (referring to the person who agrees that Will’s Oscar should be revoked), then ask your parents “so you are saying it's okay to hurt someone else because they made a bad joke about your loved one?”  As if that is a valid excuse to assault a performer during a live telecast of Hollywood's biggest award show. Anyway, later on, his wife stated she disapproved of his actions. Chris was also unaware that Jada was afflicted with an autoimmune disease called Alopecia. He claimed that if he had known, he would not have made the joke.

Your parents state, “our final reason for Will to keep his award, is that the slap saved the Academy Awards.” The Oscars were on their way out before, but this year's audience increased by 58 percent from last year's record-low of 10.5 million. So the question you ask your parents is, “if you punch someone famous and you get fame from it, does that justify the violence?” No!

In conclusion, even if you believe Will should keep or lose his Oscar, we should all agree that what he did was wrong and that he should have talked to Chris instead of resorting to violence. Chris should not have been smacked because he does not understand body language and had no clue that Jada had Alopecia. Rock should be an example of how to deal with violence because instead of hitting Will Smith back, he just stood there and said “he slapped me.”  That was the most effective way of addressing the issue.  I hope you are aware of and agree that Will Smith's Oscar should be revoked.
