10 Things I Hate About You Movie Analysis Essay Example

The first time I watched “10 things I hate about you” I was skeptical, because I thought it would be like every other teen romantic comedy. My, was I wrong. There is no doubt that this is the best film of all time. Not only did it end up being my favorite film, but I also learnt an important lesson. Money cannot buy you happiness, but love can. Winning 2 awards for ‘best breakthrough performance and most promising actor’ with 2 nominations for MTV movies and TV awards, this film is truly inspiring. 

The film, “10 things I hate about you”, directed by Gil Junger, follows the lives of a proud, young feminist girl, Katarina "Kat" Stratford. The sweet, pretty, and popular girl at school, Bianca Stratford. The schools ‘bad boy’ Patrick Verona and Camereon James, the new kid who naturally falls head over heels for the sweet, popular girl at school, Bianca.  

Inspired by Shakespear's ‘Taming of the Shrew’ this film reenacts the play with a 1990’s high school twist. Kat is a headstrong girl who cannot stand anyone bringing down other people, that often gets her into trouble. Kat is not like every other girl, she despises the idea of dating and anything to do with boys, thinking that it is a waste of time to be in relationships. She is a good student who gets straight A’s at school, and she has a dream of getting into Sarah Lawarence College. On top of that, she is a feminist, and is proud to be her own self, witty and well-spoken. Despite being left ‘unpopular’ due to her being antisocial at school, she faces life with a nonchalant smile and continues to ace school with the occasional visit to her principal's office. Nothing in her 18 years of life could stop her from getting into her dream college in New York. 

Bianca, Kat’s sister, popular, and pretty, loves the idea of boys. Her hair always neat and tidy, her clothes always neatly pressed, lips always glossy. Every boy in school is in love with her. Especially the new boy Camereon. Camereon is willing to do anything to please Bianca and will do anything to get her attention. So much so, that he even learns a new language for her. At home Kat and Biancas overly protective father places a rule that if the oldest, Kat, does not have a boyfriend, neither can Bianca. Luckily Camereon is smart and knows a certain ‘bad boy’ who needs money, Patrick, who might just get him the chance to finally be with Bianca. 

I absolutely love this film! The way everyone was portrayed, the cast, the emotions you could just feel brimming out of the characters, I could watch this film 10 times straight and not get bored! With Kat being independent and strong-willed, brilliant, and sharp, everything I aspire to be. Bianca being incredibly sweet and popular, and Camareon being the smart, ambitious kid, everything about this film is a must watch!
