Since the pandemic in 2020, there have been positive signs and a decrease in many anthropogenic activities. There was a positive change in the environment, such as Pollution in cities has decreased, wild animals have increasingly been spotted entering urban areas, and many new cycle lanes have opened up worldwide. However, this was not the same case with deforestation because, during the Virus, Parts of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil was still in danger; moreover, due to Covid, they are more in danger than before. The deforestation rates in the Amazon rainforest have increased due to covid.

Deforestation is the clearing of forest land. Throughout history and into modern times, forests have been cut in the majority amount to make space for human needs such as agriculture purposes, obtain wood for fuel or manufacture things such as wood, resources from the forest, and even construct something on the land. This has been ongoing process that has increased over time. This process is way crucial in the forest of amazon situated in Brazil. The article by WWF Titled “The vital Links between the Amazon rainforest, global warming and you” states that “The Amazon rainforest has long has recognized as a repository of ecological services not only for local tribes and communities but also for the rest of the world. It is also the only rainforest we have left in terms of size and diversity.” it shows how the Amazon rainforest is essential to humans and different species. It also concludes that this is the only forest we have that is vast in size and holds diverse number of species.

The article named “Tropical Forest destruction Accelerated in 2020” by Henry fountain, published by the NY Times, includes that the world resource institute based in Washington reports annually on the subject. The institute reports that the rates were increased by 12 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. The article also states that “ The institute’s analysis said the loss of that much forest added more than two and a half billion metric tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere or about twice as much as is spewed into the air by cars in the United States every year.” This evidence shows that the pandemic situation does correlate with the matter of deforestation. since deforestation is an ongoing process, and it gets worse day by day by releasing tons of carbon on a large scale because it is cutting the large area especially trees which release twice as much carbon compared to cars. Hence, deforestation is more dangerous and the fact that it increased more than last year.

The article included that “Last year, anecdotal reports from Brazil and other countries suggested that deforestation was rising because of the pandemic, as the health crisis hampered governments’ efforts to enforce bans on clear-cutting, and as workers who lost their jobs because of the downturn migrated out of cities to rural areas to farm.” t since brazil considered as third world country and during pandemic the economic downturn that caused people to poach, and cut trees in order to make a living out in these challenging times. Not only that but the demand for resources such as oil from trees or timber wood. The economic downturn due to pandemics is what causes the deforestation rate to go high up.

The choices the author made in this article provide evidence but also give credibility to it. For example, the author of this article is credible enough to write the article about the environment because Henry Fountain specializes in the science of climate change and its impacts. He has been writing about science for The Times for more than 20 years and has traveled to the Arctic and Antarctica. It shows that the author is credible, and the audience reading this article would also take this matter and have awareness, or have a knowledge of what is happening with the envoirnment, and how deforestation is threatening for our next generations.
