Charismatic Leadership Essay Example

A leader who is charismatic is usually an individual who has a charming and colorful personality. According to the textbook, charisma is a positive and compelling quality that makes others want to follow the person who possesses it. Given that charisma is based on perceptions, attributions made by group members about the characteristics of leaders and the results they achieve, that just shows what the important components are it takes to become a charismatic leader. If people perceive a leader to have a specific characteristic, such as being visionary, the leader will be perceived as more charismatic. Charismatic characteristics are important because they lead to other behavioral outcomes such as loyalty, self-sacrifice, and high performance. With that being stated, the person in my life who I consider to be charismatic is my father because he can attract, motivate, or lead others with the use of his strong communication skills, his positive energy and action orientation, and his excellent vision towards success for his followers. 

To start off, my father is a charismatic person due to the fact that he possesses masterful communication skills. He has the ability to inspire people because whenever he is leading a large group of people, I always hear him using colorful language, strong metaphors, and analogies. Charismatic leaders like my father, are also able to make group members feel capable of getting tasks done by enabling them to achieve success on relatively easy projects. For example, my father was running for town council and he had to lead a team of four people. In order for him to lead his group, he had to give them tasks to complete such as putting up signs and printing posters. The way my father was able to lead a group in a positive manner and motivate his followers, makes him more of a charismatic leader. He then praises the group members and gives them more demanding assignments through the use of communication. My father’s visions, goals, and directives are typically communicated in a colorful, imaginative, and expressive manner. He communicates openly with his group members and creates a comfortable communication climate. This gift that my father has to inspire others stems from his ability to create genuine connections with others and to understand his followers’ needs, all the while respecting his own desires. 

In addition, my father is a charismatic leader who demonstrates positive energy and action orientation. A key characteristic of charismatic leaders is the ability to also express feelings openly. I noticed that my father also exhibits nonverbal emotional expressiveness, such as warm gestures and frequent (nonsexual) touching of group members whenever he comes into contact with them. The combination of passion, optimism, and high energy is a major behavior pattern of charismatic people. Many people are unlikely to perceive a person as charismatic unless they possess a high level of all three characteristics. A remarkable characteristic that my father has that makes him more of a charismatic leader is enthusiasm because no matter what mood he is in, he has to show his followers that anyone can be resilient throughout the course of their workday and beyond. When he elevates his energy level, that takes a considerable amount of work, but it helps when it comes to connecting with others.

Lastly, my father exemplifies a charismatic leader due to his vision because he offers an exciting image of where his team is headed and how to get there. A vision is more than a forecast; it describes an ideal version of the future of an entire organization. Vision, the ability to imagine different and better future conditions and ways to achieve them, is a major buzzword in leadership and management. An effective leader is expected to have a vision, whereas an ineffective leader either does not have one or has one that is unclear. Being a visionary is a difficult task, and my father is a visionary leader because he uses his brain differently than others like when he has to think quickly on his feet or come up with a new idea on the spot. He has the ability to create visions for others and that plays a significant role in his perceived charisma. A vision inspires and draws others to it. My father looks beyond the immediate future to envision what his team or followers within it can become. A vision is designed to close the discrepancy between current and ideal conditions, thus helping my father see beyond current realities and expectations.

To conclude, one thing that many great leaders have in common is charisma. Charismatic leaders are those who can inspire and encourage others to do more than they would normally do in the face of obstacles and personal sacrifice. Charisma is what inspires energy and commitment in those who follow it. My father has the ability to persuade his followers to do what he needs them to do. He fosters an impeccable amount of change and expresses an ideal vision of a brighter future. My father possesses distinct characteristics that have an impact on his followers and cause them to behave in such a way that allows for remarkable results. A charismatic leader attracts followers because of his or her personality and magnetism. My father possesses these extraordinary qualities, which have been described as someone who demonstrates what a charismatic leader is and the people who he leads; follows and looks up to him. His entire purpose as a charismatic leader is to try and allow his passion and enthusiasm to rub off on his team members by projecting a positive and energetic attitude. Charisma comes from doing something leaders are truly passionate about, something that piques their interest. My father appears to emerge during difficult times, whether in personal relationships or within organizations, simply because an inspiring personality helps to reduce stress or anxiety among its followers and that truly explains why others see him as a charismatic leader.
