How much in common can two novels written in two very different time periods be similar ? In “Of Mice and Men “, written in 1937 right before the great depression , we see Lennie who has a dream of living on a ranch . In '' The Great Gatsby “, written in 1925 amid the roaring twenties , we see Gatsby , a man that has the dream of finding and settling down with his one true love. These two novels share a similar “ All American Dream “ , the dream of settling down , living a stable and happy life , whether that be with rabbits or a romantic partner.
In “ The Great Gatsby “ , we are first told about Gatsby's dream in Chapter One. When Nick sees Gatsby on the dock looking at green light , the reason why he is staring at the light is unclear at first but as we advance more into the story we see why. In chapter six , after he has had his first encounter with Daisy , he says , “ you always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock” . Now the reason why he was staring at the right is clear , it is not only a light it is the hope he has to be with Daisy . Even though years have passed Gatsby never lost hope and dreams of living a happy life with Daisy .
