This amendment protects the rights of citizens to "bear arms" or own weapons such as guns. The Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. The amendment's primary justification was to prevent the United States from needing a standing army. Preventing the United States from starting a professional army was the single most important goal of the Second Amendment. Why do we need the second amendment? The Founding Fathers felt that citizens should be able to protect themselves against the government and any other threat to their wellbeing or personal freedom.
