Gun Control Essay Example

In spite of all the weapons, gun control continues to be the subject the most discussed in the United States for the past few decades. Guns have been a big problem in the United States for some time now. Citizens need to defend themselves; I understand that. However, do I think that we require more stringent control of all types of guns? As a matter of fact, I do think that we need more control. The government cannot simply go and tell the citizens of this country that they cannot purchase a gun when it comes to protecting their families. Because of the fact that it is protected in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed upon because a well-regulated militia is essential to the security of a free state.  As we can see, guns have undeniably caused more harm than good in the past few years. If something that is supposed to be used for protection is being used wrongly something needs to be done about it. The question is: is it going to stop, and if so, when? Perhaps the most important gun control issue of the day is this: at the heart of American gun control debate is a question that goes beyond the question of gun control itself: What level of gun control can be supported by the Second Amendment without threatening personal liberty? According to the second amendment, the right to keep and bear arms is protected. It does not guarantee that guns will be used for any purpose or guarantee that they will be used for their intended purposes. Second Amendment supporters acknowledge this, but they often go further, arguing that the right to bear arms is as fundamental to the Second Amendment as the freedom of speech.  

Section 2 of the Second Amendment was not written to protect militias, police, or even ordinary citizens. Instead, it was written to protect the right to keep and bear arms from being taken away by the government. More specifically, it was written to cover individuals who: primarily, were not the government, but who had a special need to protect their own physical safety; and secondly wanted to have access to a firearm. The right to keep and bear arms, like other enumerated rights, does not depend on an individual having a need for self-protection and therefore does not infringe. 

Some states put their legislation into action by making gun possession more restrictive, and as a result of that, there is less gun violence especially mass shootings in these states. The same thing happens in other countries as well, for example, Japan or the UK. That makes gun violence in those countries so much lower than it is in the United States. As the yearly death by all types of guns keeps increasing, not much is really being done about it other than random talk about it in the news, and even when they start talking about doing something about it, we cannot really see a difference, because the mass shootings keep happening. Gun control is extremely complicated in the United States due to the fact that every state has different regulations and laws on how to purchase a gun, and what type of gun is approved.  

Considering that the Second Amendment gives people the right to keep and bear arms, so we cannot really know who is purchasing the gun for protection, or who is purchasing the gun to do terrible acts with the weapon. And because we do not know the real reason why that person is buying this weapon other than the fact that they tell you they want to buy it to protect themselves or their family members, that is one of the reasons why there have been so many school shootings. Mental illness is one of the significant risk factors for mass shootings. The risk that a mass shooter will act based on a mental health problem and/or the intention to harm others is heightened among those with mental illness. The person who is purchasing the gun might have mental illness issues, and due to mental issues one moment, they can be thinking about something, and the next second they can be thinking about something entirely different from it. Something can trigger that person and that can probably cause that person to react violently. The issue of mental health is one that have continually been raised, but largely ignored as there have been no definitive method for determining who is mentally ill and who is not until there have been a tragedy. And I think that it would be best if they would have a mental background check before they sell a gun to anybody.  

Over the past few decades, there have been approximately 288 school shootings in the United States. School is supposed to be a safe place for students but what does that say when a parent sends their kids to school, However, the person does not return home due to the fact that there is always some mental instability in someone who goes into any type of school and kills that person. and I understand that the person might have stolen the gun, nevertheless that does not change the fact that the kid is traumatized or even worse than that the kid is dead. Lately, there have been a lot of school shootings almost every month. This means that at least 3 to 5 people die almost every month as the result of gun violence. The vast majority of gun violence is committed by lawful gun owners. I realized that most of the school shootings were done by young adults, and they can be out in the age range of approximately 15 to 25 years old. In addition to this, young men are most likely to take part in mass shootings. I believe that most of the young adults of this generation do not think maturely enough when they are from 14 to at least 25 years old. They let their emotions get the best of them. The more control we have over who is in possession of guns the fewer casualties there are going to be in the country.
