What’s your favorite video game? If anyone has played video games, for the majority of their childhood, they’ve likely heard this question once or twice. The best thing about this is that with every person asked this, you get a different answer every time. Some people favorite God of War, Mario, or even Call of Duty. My favorite game of all time has got to be No More Heroes.

The first thing I love about No More Heroes is its story. The plot of the game centers around an otaku assassin, named Travis Touchdown, who is trying to become the best assassin on a leaderboard of other assassins, in hopes of getting laid. As the story progresses, you slowly see Travis start to hate killing all of the other assassins, he’s been fighting. This theme is even expanded upon in the characters, who in their own way, symbolize a part of what one’s life could be like if they do desire to take on the career of a mercenary. Another great part of the story is how little it takes itself seriously. Especially considering that saving the game makes Travis use the bathroom.

Secondly, what has got to be another amazing thing about No More Heroes, is the gameplay. The gameplay is simple. You use the Wii remote’s motion controls to make Travis attack with his beam katana. When an enemy’s health is depleted you swing both the nunchuck and Wii remote in a direction shown onscreen, for a finisher that will have enemies spewing fountains of their blood. This leads to an extremely satisfying experience overall, as you hack and slash through anything that gets in your way of being number one.

Third, a more personal reason for why I love No More Heroes so much, is how under the radar it is. No More Heroes didn’t exactly get the most sales, likely due to its M rating. This title being on the Wii which was mainly marketed as a family friendly console. However over the years, the game and series as a whole has developed a much deserved cult following. It being under the radar gives for an experience that really makes it feel like you’re enjoying something that not everyone else knows about.

My answer to the age old question of what my favorite video game is will forever and always be No More Heroes. Everything from the story, gameplay, and lack of appreciation for it. Really, I could go on for hours and hours on end talking about how much I love No More Heroes. Here’s hoping that more people can come to love this hidden gem.
