Have you ever discovered your own personal values? What do you treasure? In “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughs it talks about how the speaker's life has not been perfect and how maybe they had hard times figuring out what they liked to do. Also in “The Celebration of Grandfather '' by Rudolfo Anaya it talks about how Mexicans have changed the world with their hard work. It seems like they found their personal values and how to value them. Both Anya and Hughs illustrate their personal values in their stories; Their values are shaped by generation and throughout life

One similarity between Anaya and Hughs is that they both express themselves about how they feel throughout their stories and how they shaped their personal values. The person that’s reading or saying the poem is understanding that the poem talks about how hard life was back then. “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It has tacks and splinters” (Pg 1 Line 3,4,5). This quote explains that they had to go through tough times. This quote matters because it shows how they felt through everyday things like splinters and tacks. In The Celebration of Grandfather by Rudolfo Anaya he makes it seem like Mexican Workers changed the world.“Hard workers all, they tilted the earth and farmed, ran the herds and spun wool.” (Pg 5). This quote explains that people that work in farms have done a good job doing their work. This matters because they have worked more than enough if it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have fruit or vegetables. In other words, Anaya and Hughs have their similarities because they both express themselves the same way

Anaya and Hughs have similarities because they both tell their personal stories about how they lived.  In the poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughs the narrator is talking about how they should step back because it can be hard to get up again.“ Don’t you set down on the steps ‘cause you find it’s kinder hard” (Pg 3 Line 16,17). The quote is saying that when they try to go on forward they end up facing an obstacle. This quote is important because it talks about true events and what happened back then. The story “A Celebration of Grandfather” states how Anaya lived and how he inherited the behaviors from. “ Buenos Días que le de dios abuelo'' (pg 1 line 1). This quote is important because it really talks about how they educated their kids. They showed them how to behave and how to greet other people, especially their elders. In other words Anaya and Hughs have similarities because of their behavior and how they lived.

Anaya and Hughes have differences because in both “Mother to Son'' and `` A Celebration of Grandfather” They have different outcomes. In “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes it talks about how they struggled like they were losing hope. In Pg 2 Line 12-13 it says “Where there ain't no light”. The quote shows that they gave up on having hope or faith. This quote is important because it talks about how they struggled and why it was hard for people to keep their faith. In “A Celebration of Grandfather” by Rudolfo Anaya it states how abuelitos and abuelitas worked hard for their whole life and how they kept their faith. “ These old abuelos and abuelitas have worked the earth all their lives.” (Pg 2). The sentence is saying that old people have worked their whole lives to raise their children. This quote matters because it doesn’t only talk about how they raised their children but also that they kept faith that they were going to take care of their family with everything they had. All in all, Anaya and Hughes have differences because they have different outcomes in their poem or story. One of the outcomes is sad and the other one is happy.  In conclusion Both Anaya and Hughes shaped their personal values by experience and generation. The takeaway of the essay is to understand why “A Celebration of Grandfather '' and “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes have some similarities and differences and what they went through. I can make a connection to the story “A Celebration of Grandfather” because the way he expresses and politely talks and respects reminds me that that’s how my parents raised me.
