In this essay I will discuss why we should have awareness of people being better at their own things and why it’s a good idea to not compel them to do the things you want them to. I will go over 3 different reasons why it’s important to me and society, one, it’s important to know that people are better at different things, two, by doing so it will come into an advantage, and three, it can boost self awareness and confidence. The book relating to this theme is called “Slide the Corner”. Because in the long run, if people follow their passions they will succeed in them.

It is important to understand that people are better at their own things they’re interested in. As it’s unfair to the person if you force them to do something that they dislike or don’t do well at.

For example, in the text, Greg’s parents always tell him that “Cars are dumb”, “They’re a waste of time”. And they constantly force him to stay and do well in academics. While he’s very passionate about cars and racing.

This will then lead to underestimating the abilities of people. Sometimes when someone fails at one thing, the other person will think that they’re useless and have no skill, while this is simply not the case. They may not be good at the thing they failed on, but they’re talented in something else.

And when you force someone to do the things you expect them to do, don’t always expect them to succeed, because we’re all better at different things.

This is important to me, as I’m usually quiet in my social life. And when people see that I don’t talk much, they often underestimate my abilities and think I don’t offer much, just because I don’t talk a lot, I offer more mentally rather than verbally.

And if someone forces me to become more extroverted, they shouldn’t expect me to succeed, while interacting with others is my weak point. I’m significantly better at other things.

When people are better at different things, it can come into an advantage not only for them, but also you. If you let someone follow their passions, their likelihood of succeeding with it in the future will be very high. And it could possibly benefit too.

A perfect example of this is when Greg and his family were on their way to Auckland. While they were on their way to Auckland, they almost got into a car accident, but luckily due to Greg’s skill and passion about cars, he was able to prevent it from happening. His Dad even compliments him by saying, “You can thank your lucky stars that my son is a good driver.”

And Greg did exceptionally well in rallying, as a co-driver and driver in general. He averaged around 2nd-3rd place.

This is why we should allow people to do the things they like doing, because in the long run, they will succeed with their passion. For example, if you were passionate about sports, you will most likely become a professional athlete, as you have talent in sports.

And if you're ever in a sticky situation, they will likely step up like what Greg did when they almost got into a car accident. This is why we should never underestimate people's abilities, just because they’re bad at one thing or another.

This is important to me because when I’m included, I won’t be the voice of the group, but I have a lot of abilities to offer on paper. And to top it off, I may not be the best at sports, but I’m a good listener, so if someone looks lost, I can guide them in the right direction.

Following your passions can improve self awareness of others and can boost your confidence. This is important to note, as this can help people mentally and physically, and having awareness of this can boost overall happiness. Doing your passions makes you happier rather than something else.

For example, while Greg was co-driving for Brad in the race, throughout the whole race, Greg felt enthusiastic and confident, as he enjoyed every moment of it. As cars are his thing, his passion.

A quote of evidence: “More! I want to do it all again! Right now! I’ve been injected with a syringe full of excitement. It’s beating around in my blood. I’m wound up—hyped up high as the moon,”

This is why we should have awareness of others' passions, as it can improve them mentally, increase their happiness etc. To expand this idea, we will have more dedication and creativity in what we’re good at, as we are knowledgeable in what we like doing. These are all very important, and are something that people should be aware of.

This is important to me as ever since I’ve discovered a new passion, I felt happier and eager to explore more about that topic. I feel happier, confident and dedicated in doing the things I like doing. And to add on to this, the world would be a better place if we followed our passions in my opinion, there would be professionalism about everywhere you go, as we all did what we had knowledge and passion on.
