It’s been suggested that there is an issue at the point where the country of Mexico meets the United States: there is. Immagration and peoples opinion on this topic can get ugly: judgemental, tense, frightful, displeasing. Whenever this topic comes up we begin to see an unattractive side of humanity trying to politicize the subject matter. The increase of migration from the southern border can be argued and most likely driven by covid-19. There is more opportunity for immigrants, benefits for immigrants who freely choose to cross the border lines, with the risk being huge the borders and security isn’t efficient enough to stop criminal acts. When a situation like this is detrimental to Americans and their families it is essential and needed to take political opinions out of it and look at the bigger picture.
Even if you have never taken an economics 101 course before, the chances of you hearing the term “supply and demand” is very likely. In the United States the unemployment rate is at 4.8% as of September 2021, during the pandemic its highest was at an astounding 14.8% in March 2020. Now that the government has introduced stimulus checks it is affecting people from getting back to work. Now, the supply of workers is low however at almost every store we walk into we see a huge NOW HIRING sign which is an indication that the demand to get back to work is still very low.
An incentive is a thing that motivates people to do something. With the government giving more and more people stimulus checks for doing nothing it gives people more of an incentive to stay at home rather than go out and make less money for a real job. When people don’t want to work this puts companies in a difficult position and may result in closure. It is safe to say that companies and businesses are quite desperate for able bodied help. We can even use Dr. Hooks’ son as an example when working at Sheetz, Dr. Hooks explained to us that Sheetz was cutting him off from working the minimum amount of hours to be paid a salary. This is bad for Americans because we are losing enough jobs through the advancement of technology and now more jobs are being taken away from people that are not American Citizens.
The risk the illegal immigrants are taking in this situation is immense. It reveals how poor the way of life is outside the U.S. could be especially with how dangerous Mexico could be with the cartel. I can relate to this because I grew up and still am in a household where one of my parents is an immigrant and came here legally. My mom is from a town with little to no opportunity with the population being below 500 and usually everyone that lives there is satisfied with getting a high school diploma and becoming a farmer. That is okay, the world needs farmers, the world needs enterprising people, the world needs teachers and so on and so forth. The point I am trying to make is I sympathize with the people that have less opportunities than others but what I want to make clear is that there is a legal process to come to the land of the free. In order to maximize peoples opportunities that were not born in the United States, the government should elect more judges in order to give more people from different countries the opportunity to thrive in the U.S. who are worthy of it.
In conclusion, the crisis at the southern border isn’t being covered enough. A huge issue that is taking place and is threatening to many Americans trying to get back on their feet since the pandemic. My biggest input to fix this crisis without associating myself with the man that proposed this idea would be to build a wall. I am in favor of the wall because we are the United States of America, what happens when we let 50% of immigrants in from Mexico, that’s not making America more diverse, it is making America Mexico. I am pro-build a wall and I am pro- legal immigration. The solution of this could be to build a wall with a big door and welcome anyone who wants to fill out the correct paperwork and flourish in the promised land.
