The Flight from Conversation by Sherry Turkle is all about how technologies change how people communicate the way we used to. Different devices, applications and social medias are the things which are now became our innovative way in exchanging communication instead of regular face to face conversation.

She stated that “ Human relationships are rich; they’re messy and demanding. We have learned the habit of cleaning them up with technology. And the move from conversation to connection is part of this. But it’s a process in which we shortchange ourselves. Worse, it seems that over time we stop caring, we forget that there is a difference.” Turkle’s trying to say is that is that we have lost the skills of conversation and replaced it with connection through text and social media. She said “ We are tempted to think that our little “sips” of online connection add up to a big gulp of real conversation” Another thing she stated was the intimate conversation with one another as she said that “FACE-TO-FACE conversation unfolds slowly. It teaches patience.” When we communicate on our digital devices, we learn different habits. As we ramp up the volume and velocity of online connections, we start to expect faster answers. To get these, we ask one another simpler questions; we dumb down our communications, even on the most important matters. It is as though we have all put ourselves on cable news. Because of technologies she said that “We’ve become accustomed to a new way of being “alone together.” Technology-enabled, we are able to be with one another, and also elsewhere, connected to wherever we want to be. The Flight from conversation tells us how our relationship in technology is more valuable than the face to face communication during these days. As what Turkle said “We expect more from technology and less from one another.” Right now, we became very careful with our phones like a gold vase because there’s this part of us on how we witnessed phones as our partners in crime when no one’s gonna lean on. “ I share therefore I am” We use technology to define ourselves by sharing our thoughts and feelings as we’re having them.

The Flight from Conversation from Sherry Turkle gives realization to me and I agree with it. There is no doubt that technology has changed the way human communicate. Today, more people are hiding their feelings, and whereabouts behind mobile phones and this has raised suspicions among families, friends and couples. Great impacts can be seen in the way communication has changed the social structures of our society at all levels. Even in years to come, technology remains the driving force of the way people interacts. The tremendous proliferation of this device has drastically changed the traditional communication model. The use of mobile technology has affected the personalities of people to a great extent.
