The Dred Scott Decision Essay Example

The verdict produced by the US court pushed our nation deeper and closer to the civil war, The conclusion that came about was slaves would have no legal rights regardless of where they are or who they are I believe that this verdict would be the thing that would push many advocates of ending slavery to the brink because it means their fight was being drowned out.

Dred Scott a former slave wanted every slave to have the same rights as white people or anyone with proper human rights, He had the same ideas as Frederick Douglass just different ways of stating them for example Frederick Douglass met with President Lincoln to try to urge him to once and for all end slavery in the North and the South, while Dred Scott went to court to try and reach a verdict of equality, although he tried his best it was still determined that slaves would 

have no rights. 

Although Frederick Douglass agreed with Dred Scott on abolishing slavery, he knew what the decision would be and thought that it would start an uproar and turmoil after everyone found out, while I agree with Douglas I think Dred Scott was brave for going toe to toe in court knowing that the outcome may not be ideal. 

I believe the Dred Scott decision helped America grow to where it is today because while it did express that slaves are property and have no human rights, it also was a significant step towards many slaves finding their path to liberation. After all, it broadened the political rift between the north and south and drove us closer to the civil war which essentially helped slavery end in April 1865.
