The Capitol is the utopian city of Panem. It is also the government of the 12 poorer districts in Panem. The author Suzanne Collins connects much of its characteristics with our real-world society. Even though she doesn’t say it directly through the dialogue or narration she makes a lot of connections with the capital to our society.

She connects it to our society by giving the Capitol a few characteristics similar to ours. Both can be very capitalistic which gives both unequal opportunities. The author also uses The Capitol to make the statement that both our society and the capital are unfair. The characters also describe the capital buildings and people with a lot of bright colors, bright lights, and modifications. These things are also present throughout our society through tattoos, clothing, hair, buildings, food, and even vehicles.

They are both similar in ways of entertainment. There are many harmless ways of entertainment in the capital and our society like and music parades. However, there are still dangerous and cruel ways on how both find entertainment. For the capital, it is the hunger games where the 24 tributes have to kill each other as a means of entertaining the capital. While for our society it is an animal or person used for entertainment such as bullfighting, lion petting, acrobatics, dogfighting, birds fighting, dangerous tricks like being buried alive or catching a bullet, and sky diving, just to name a few. Not only are all of them dangerous they also pose risks to the person or animal’s life.

Both of their ways of governing can be similar. Not all districts of Panem are governed the same. It is just like how different places have different laws. Except there are still places where strict laws are enforced like in district 11 and district 12. Alternative from places that have less strict laws like the capitol and district 1.

There are also practices or traditions in the capital like there are in our society. The comparison of the capital to the districts greatly supports the author’s message. This is because the message that the author is trying to show relates to how there are different social classes and a lot of oppression in society. In comparison to the capital, the 12 districts are poor. Most of the districts are under strict laws and are under ill-treatment. The characters talk about their lives in districts 11 and 12 and both explain that there is barely any food and many people die from starvation. Rue explains that there are public whippings all the time and many people get killed every day due to the gamemakers. Katniss even explains that the higher districts are favorited because they are the capital’s “lapdogs”.

There are many connections made between the capital and the world of the hunger games to our society. Maybe even too many to count. This is why the comparisons cant fit into a single essay. This is why this essay must come to a conclusion.
