The Solution to Climate Change Essay Sample

Imagine yourself 100 years from now. The world is barren and empty and has the heat of a desert. It is hard to breathe, and you don’t see plants nor water in sight. These are the effects of climate change. People need to fight for a sustainable world that can inhabit people for generations more. 

Climate change is killing our history. Mesopotamia was the first known human civilization. It was located in Iraq, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Now those rivers are practically non-existent. They are no longer freshwater. The saltwater that enters from the ocean is poisoning the farmland that this area is mainly used for. Some villages had to be abandoned as there was no food to feed them. Entire families had to be relocated because of the water crisis. According to the United Nations, “…more than 100 square miles of farmland a year are being lost to desert.” Why do people have to lose more and more because others don’t know how to take care of the environment? The traditions of the ancient civilizations were preserved in some farms. That was a valuable insight into the past. Now that they moved, how are they supposed to carry on these traditions or teach them to their kids. This area’s carbon footprint is one of the smallest. The majority of gas emissions come from China and America (Tribune Content Agency via Gale in Context). These ancient lands do not need to pay for the mistakes of these countries. That is human history that needs to be preserved so we can understand our past and where we came from. 

Finding oil kills. As most know, gas is made of oil, which contributes to climate change. Finding the oil to make gas ruins ecosystems. To find oil, companies have to use big machines attached to boats to create seismic boom. As stated in Gale in Context, “The sound blasts can damage the ears and internal organs of animals.” This means that even though the oil hasn’t been refined into gas or petroleum, but it can still kill. Not only do these seismic booms kill, but they also can cause changes in the ecosystem. If seismic booms are heard near a whale breeding or feeding ground, the whales will abandon that feeding/breeding ground. This means algae or fish would overpopulate and change the environment. That also means they would move to a new ground and possibly infiltrate another pod’s territory. Most whales, especially orcas, can and will kill to protect their grounds. According to NOAA Fisheries, a government website, at least 25 different whale species are endangered or threatened. The whale’s population is very low as is, and they are a necessity for the health of the environment. The whales need to keep their breeding grounds and feeding grounds restricted to their pods. 

Climate change can affect people’s wallets. Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England states there are, “…a series of climate change-related risks in 2015 that could shake the financial system. The rising costs of extreme weather, lawsuits against companies that have contributed to climate change and the falling value of fossil fuel assets could all have an impact.” In 2008, there was a similar situation with Wall Street. The banks made a mistake, and everyone had to pay for it, including the average household. The housing and stock market were hit almost as hard as the Great Depression. Almost 13 years later, the effects from the 2008 crash are still being felt today. Imagine that happening again. After the Covid-19 pandemic, people do not want to deal with another crisis. 

There is still plenty of time to make our actions right. One example of this is the California canals. California has many summertime droughts and power shortages. To combat the droughts, people have begun building canals. Others have had a genius idea of installing solar panels on top of the canals (Bales, Roger and McKuin, Brandi; ProQuest). This would lower the water temperature and give more power to California without the use of fossil fuels. The solution to climate change is right in front of us. We need to change our ways, so this planet can stay our home.
