The Theme Of Dreams In The Alchemist (Essay Example)

Dreams are an interesting phenomenon. A thought that you have about a vision of yourself that you can start to make right now. It compels you to explore yourself and the world. One of the best fiction stories about following your dreams is The Alchemist. In The Alchemist, the main theme in the novel is that people should pursue their dreams at all costs; this is good/useful advice because your dream is something you already know,  when you go and try to achieve your dreams, you might think that you will suffer, but the experience will help you grow as a person and, although it is difficult to follow your dream, the rewards of accomplishing your dreams are worth it and then some.

My first point is that you already know your “personal legend”. In The Alchemist, Santiago meets the old king, Melchizedek, who said that the reason that he has come to him is because, “you have succeeded in discovering your personal legend” (Coelho, 23). Santiago did not know what a personal legend was so Melchizedek said, “It’s is what you have always wanted to accomplish”(23). This quote shows that everyone has a personal legend because everyone, at some point in their lives, has wanted to accomplish something. It might not be a big journey like Santiago’s personal legend, but we all have some smaller dreams and have others that are bigger. The point is that everyone has a dream that they were destined to do and all we can do is discover it.

My second point is that when you go and try to achieve your dreams, you might think that you will suffer, but the experience will help you grow as a person. When Santiago's heart was afraid that it might suffer, the alchemist said, “ Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams…”.  This quote shows that people should not be afraid of going to follow their dreams because they will not suffer. People are afraid of following their dreams because they think that something bad will happen to them and instead, stay in their comfort zone, not knowing what is on the outside of it. For example, me and how I had moved here this semester. In my previous school I was a kid who did not try to make new friends and never tried to learn new skills and try new ventures but when I moved here things changed. It was not easy at first I was scared that I would be humiliated, but slowly I became more social.

My final point is about the rewards of fulfilling your dream. When Santiago found his treasure after a year of struggle and hard work, he thought, “It’s true; life really is generous to those who pursue their Personal Legend”(170). This is true in real life as well. Tom Monaghan is the man behind Domino's Pizza. He had bought a store with his last $1000 dollars, but his business was not going well and he was so poor that he could not eat his own food. Despite the hardship he faced, he knew, with all his heart, that his store would be successful and the rest is history. When you have a dream, it is an instinct to follow it and that dream, when fulfilled will yield great rewards.

The Alchemist is a story with the main theme in the novel being that people should pursue their dreams at all costs; this is good/useful advice because your dream is already in your heart somewhere, when you try to achieve your dreams, you might think that you will suffer, but the experience will help you grow as a person, although it is difficult to follow your dream, the rewards of accomplishing your dreams are worth it and then some. I want to conclude with my own dream. My dream is to be able to change the world in a positive way. I want to do this because I want to change how the world works. To accomplish my dream, I have done new things so I can talk to new people to learn more about people because knowing people and being kind is the two best ways to make a difference in society and the world as a whole.
