Rouben Zachary Mamoulian born on October 8, 1897, is one of the most influential filmmakers, and contributors in cinematic history. He is an Armenian- American director, inventor, and producer. Rouben is known for his contribution to the development of cinematic art at the beginning of the sound era. 

Mamoulian directed and made 17 influential films that made him as famous as he is today. His movie “The Mark of Zorro'' ended up being the inspiration for Batman, everyone’s favorite superhero. Zorro is a dark mysterious character who Batman is inspired by. In the Batman Comics, Bruce Wayne and his parents watch the Mark of Zorro in the theater, before his parents get murdered in an alley way. Mamoulian had two actors in his movies that were nominated for Academy Awards, yet sadly never won.  The Sydney Film Festival happens to have an award named after him which is, the Rouben Mamoulian Award for the Best Director of an Australian Short Film. Among his many achievements was his ability to combine music and sound effects with an imaginative visual rhythm. 

As someone who has had a passion for acting her whole life, I know that thanks to this Armenian- American, we have movies and shows with sound. Someone who has been such an amazing, and influential aspect of the film industry should have more recognition and should be talked about more, yet sadly that’s not how it is. Mr.Mamoulians contribution to the cinematic sound era is incredible and inspiring, but he is rarely talked about. What he did changed how movies were filmed and ultimately impacted the modern advanced cinema industry that is so common to us, today.

His well deserved awards include, a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Directors Guild of America, and different awards for different films of his. He ended up dying on December 4, 1987, yet his legacy and contribution to the development in cinematic history in the sound era, will forever be remembered and honored.
