Food Security and Deforestation Essay Example

In life we tend to waste when we see a lot, we don’t often think about tomorrow because we only think about the moment/present. My topic is “Food Security”, I decided to write about this topic because it is important for people to know that having boundaries is an important aspect in life so they can only use what they need, not just use just to use. Therefore, food security allows people to have access to the amount of food needed daily. In other words, food security helps individuals to consistently access affordable, sufficient, or safe nutrition of food at all times. Nowadays, life is becoming difficult for some people around the world because food is rare to afford and have access to. For some families, they have to decrease the amount of food that they used to consume daily because they have to think about tomorrow and other family members. (The amount of food that they eat now is less than before and it's hard for families to secure or get access to food especially if there is a change of income in the family).

In regard to deforestation, deforestation is when people chop down trees to make new goods or materials from trees such as charcoal, papers, and more. Deforestation can be one of the main problems of food security in some countries because some people only depend on cutting trees to make charcoal, and paper therefore it causes fewer goods for the people to have access to. For example, in my country (Haiti), I often see people cut trees in their lands so they can make charcoal or just sell the logs to afford food, clothes for their family members. Therefore, cutting down trees is the main problem of having less food. As I was doing this assignment, I was explaining to my mother why people are always cutting trees instead of allowing them to make mangoes, coconut, etc. My mother replied it can be hard for them to wait for a whole year to receive goods, so they only think about the moment. Imagine seeing your family suffering because of food and you know the reason, in that case, what would you have done? Said my mother. Then she continued and said “they know today but they don’t know about tomorrow.  

We must begin to realize the effects of deforestation and its long-term environmental damage on humanity due to recent developments regarding the long-term environmental consequences of deforestation. Global deforestation leads to an increased probability of climate change, therefore increasing food shortages in other regions. The fact that we all thought everyone had enough to eat, and people in other places are dying of hunger due to drought and other factors are alarming. They have a decrease in healthy food that they all had access to and could afford a long time ago.  All these consequences are happening to the world just because lumberjacks get a lot of resources out of trees. For example,  paper, land for agriculture, and more. They never come to a point that the forest is not only an important natural resource and that it is also necessary to ensure decent conditions for all living organisms. I know without trees people will not be able to breathe oxygen and also it will rain because of plants. So if lumberjacks can’t stop deforestation we will not be able to have rain, so no rain no growth for the plants (for the food to grow). Furthermore, I know deforestation decreases the food supplies that we need to survive because plants produce the food we eat today. We are at risk of losing our ability to maintain a healthy society as a result of deforestation and climate change, which are mutually reinforcing forces. 

Glasgow kept on saying they were going to fix deforestation as a result of food security for 20 years. We still come to the point where people are still having difficulty eating healthy food such as vegetables and fruits. People are not able to provide for themselves because of food insecurity which is when a household fails to have access to enough food for everyone in the house to be active and healthy. Individuals who are from an undeveloped country face lots of starvation because they can’t secure or afford good food. In my country, it can be a challenge for some people to afford food because sometimes it might be because of the price of the food that they don’t have enough money to purchase. However, in Haiti, some people own land to produce fresh food so they help other people who are lacking with decreasing food security. My family was one of those who helped when they were able to. Sometimes my family helps when people that we have overseas send us food, so we share with our neighbors instead of letting them suffer or sell off their belongings. In addition, from the land that my father owns, he would often offer them jobs for a week or days so they can provide for their households. For example, we offer jobs such as planting peas, tomatoes, carrots, green plantain, and more. Lastly, every 6 months, our families from overseas send food to donate in front of churches, etc. We understand that although deforestation is bad for the environment, however, these people in front of the churches who have kids or are pregnant don’t even have the option of cutting or selling anything to take care of themselves or family members. 

Overall, I believe that in order to help with deforestation and food security, we as humans need to work and help each other. Helping each other is the first step in helping the environment as a whole because as stated above, based on the conversation with my mother some people don’t have the opportunity of waiting for their plants to provide food for them nor do they have any other sources that are providing any other goods. So helping each other might allow our neighbors or people, in general, to be able to wait until their trees produce food instead of cutting them to create charcoal and other things. Lastly, to conclude I would like to end with a question that’s been in my thoughts as I was writing this paper. (Question: Have you thought about what we are going to lose if we don’t change?)
