Historical Fiction Essay – Berlin Wall

August 13, 1961. A day of hopelessness, difficulty and shattered hopes. Eddy had woken to the sound of an obnoxious yell and seemingly an instance of widespread panic. Inside the space of minutes, he got aware of the reality that he was distant from everyone else in the messed up shack he liked to call home. He meandered around in his isolation. Speedily, Eddy progressed to the external asphalt where endless quantities of individuals were assembled.

To one side of him, there was his mom. Situated on the control of the cobbled road, she appeared to be debilitated, as did numerous others. Mother gazed directly ahead; pale confronted with adversity apparent in her demeanour. Unexpectedly there was an emanation typhoon of depression that had torn through Berlin. Garbage bins rattled to the ground and litter whirled here and there in the abandoned walkway. Eddy mumbled the words, "Where's daddy?" To which a dainty shrilled voice like the call of a terminating mouse answered, "Daddy isn't returning home." Days passed by and the climate was an exact impression of our low energy. Easing up tore through the sky, and tears fell so quick from the essences of his friends and family; it was difficult to recognize them from the substantial downpour. Family members of Eddy’s would visit and show regret towards his mom. She appeared as though passing and she couldn't have cared less. It was a condition of discouragement she was unable to own herself. To people around him, his emotions appeared to be silly thus he would sit by the window and notice the birds that flew the path above. Gradually he shut his eyes and he could see him – his father. He had returned into Eddy’s life, however just briefly, until he opened his eyes and saw it was all completely false.

Eddy himself had grown up on the outskirts of West Berlin, near the military command of the US. The border was patrolled and was safeguarded with boundless fences. Nothing was safe on the streets and everyone kept put in their homes, that was Eddy’s safe space. He would be able to think and regain any memories of his dad, who had passed due to the Cold War. The Cold War was the event that had caused the building of the Berlin Wall, it had separated friends and families, and it had separated people into forcefully believing what their sides stood for politically and emotionally. Eddy had numerous relative that lived on the Eastern side of Berlin. He had lost communication with his friends and his family, and it was now him and his mum, in a struggle for survival. His mom would sit by the porch, dwindling into a series of thoughts that she couldn’t contain, as every day at noon, she would burst into tears, having an emotional episode on the fact she was separated from her family.

All was going fine for the present time; however, a surge was approaching, a battle was bound to occur, and lives were to be lost. Many decided to try and escape from Eastern Berlin to the West. The battle was near. Suddenly, it went from a pitch-black, eerie street, to what turned out to be guns firing everywhere and everyone running like a pack of wild chickens. Eddy was awakened by the alarming sound of gunfire, and at lightning speed he races towards his mothers to room, to inform her about the breakout and the rising chaos. He said, “Mother, Mother, loud shots are coming from outside what is it?”, to which she replied in the calmest manner possible, “It is gunfire, get down and hide, we will be ok.”. Eddy’s heart skipped a beat, and he was terrified, after all, he was just a child. They observed their surroundings and lurked around the house searching for nooks and crannies to take cover. Eddy, drifted away as he was overcome by fatigue. He woke up the next morning and was pleased to hear that the battle was over, and their neighbourhood once again, safe and secure.

Time gradually passed and day by day, Eddy’s mental state had gotten worse, however, it was November 9, 1989, and it was the day, that Berlin more so Germany would be reunited as one collective group. Eddy would be able to meet with his family and friends, whom he hadn’t seen in 29 years, and it was a great day for German society. There was once again peace in Germany.
