Maya Angelou is a strong, self-respecting, and self-assured woman who will conquer any barrier with her self-esteem. "But nonetheless, like dust, I'll rise," she says, emphasizing that she is the most important person in the world and that she will not give up no matter what. In the opening verse, the narrator uses the word "you" to suggest that she is speaking to us or to people who despise or don't appreciate black people. "Does my sassiness bother you?" indicates that it may annoy some people, but she doesn't mind because she has the right to be sassy. The narrator also believed that we should not give up, regardless of what others say.
