The Pros and Cons of Technology Essay Sample

People very often debate whether technology is good or bad. Many people believe that technology can only cause harm to their lives and society, while many others strongly defend the technologies which have made their lives much easier and enriching than it could have been before technology was around. Both of these views are correct to an extent, but what should be examined is not whether technology in itself is good or bad, but rather how humans use it. This essay will review the cons of technology, the advancement of technology, how life itself is being affected by technology and the pros of technology.

Technology has drastically changed within the last 10 years. Nowadays, we use our phones for nearly everything. We don't even need to carry a credit card or debit card because we can use our phones to pay for anything. Those accomplishments are extraordinary, however, with the advancement in technology comes the lack of privacy for our personal information. With all the easy access to our information, it makes it hard to protect others from getting their hands on it. Seems that today people left and right are victims of identity theft and still no one takes a stand to protect their information. Since everything is being used through technology it makes it easier to expose one's private information and if a hacker gets their hands on something like that many incidents like identity fraud or theft occur. Identity theft is a growing problem and happens when someone else uses your information/identity as if it were their own. It’s a serious crime that can damage your finances, credit history, and inflict an emotional toll. The recovery process can take time, money, and patience to resolve. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, it takes 600 hours to restore your identity after a theft has taken place.

In today’s society, modern technology is evidently developing rapidly and improving. In the text it says high school and college students are always texting — while waiting in line at the cafeteria, while eating, while waiting for the campus shuttle. Not surprisingly, many of these texts are to parents (pg.589). This is another example of addiction to technology and how we use it for our daily tasks. The advancement of technology has allowed us to become self-dependent and can solve almost any problem we face in life with a simple search. Today, the internet is used for shopping, paying bills, ordering food, buying clothes and anything to achieve one's needs. Especially now that COVID is happening, this forces many people to stay home and use the internet to get anything they want without stepping foot out of their home. A popular form of technology advancing is the iPhone. Apple started coming out with the normal iPhone in 2007 and with this one simple device they have made billions from it because all they began doing was to evolve the first iPhone and 29 generations of iPhones later they are still coming out with the iPhones like the iPhone 13 pro max.

After all the advances of technology and attachment humans grow to it, this allows things such as car accidents and addiction. Nearly 390,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused by texting while driving. The attachment kids grow with their phones follows them as they grow up, which exposes them to more danger because they bring that addiction to the road. Simply because someone feels like they must respond to a text immediately is why many of the accidents occur, and most of the time this leads to a vehicular accident that can result in death. The biggest age group affected by this problem would have to be teens aging from 16 up to adults aging around 30. Texting while driving is one danger many do not realize until something drastic happens. Texting while driving is not only a threat to us, but also to other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. This all stems from the urge we have as a kid to have a screen to look at all times, just so we can feel a connection to the outside world. Cell phones are one of the main reasons for car accidents. I believe cell phones are addictive because it is causing a distraction, people to be on their phones instead of focusing on their family/lover, and people to depend on their phones too much. In the text it says Roman, eighteen, admits that he texts while driving, and he is not going to stop. “I know I should, but it’s not going to happen. If I get a Facebook message or something posted on my wall . . . I have to see it. I have to” (pg. 583). This is a clear example of how a simple buzz can make us go crazy just to see who it is or what the notification is about. Although people view technology as an important tool of the future, technology can be more harmful to society as students become distracted, leading to health concerns, and influencing people to cyberbully. To begin, technology can be used as a productive tool, but sometimes at school, this tool can become a huge distraction. With current technological advances, children are being exposed to technology at earlier ages. This early exposure could cause youth to find material not suitable for their age, this could also expose them to other children which could result in bullying. As society moves on, technology will keep diffusing and changing drastically; opening more possibilities for newer and undiscovered innovations to take over. Technology can be found anywhere, from phones to cars that people drive every day. This means that as we grow older, the more exposure the next generation after us will have to technology and the more at risk they will be because of it. The one thing that will keep growing is the advancement in technology because it is much more than just a simple device like a phone, it goes so much more like space or flying cars even.

Although there are many risks using technology there are also many benefits it brings to our lives. New technology has been created for entertainment or usefulness in people's lives, such as televisions, tablets, phones, and so on. Some main benefits that technology is known to bring are educational programs and an easier way to manage one’s health. Everyone uses technology to make their life easier. Thus, many engineers try hard to produce a new brand and high quality machines and tools. As we can see, kids, teenagers, and adults spend their time with technology and that's because not only can you play games but you can also do your job, be updated with many events going on around you and even talk to your friends with technology. We apply technology in almost everything we do in our lives, we use technology at work, we use it to extract materials, we use technology for communication, transportation, learning, securing data, scaling businesses and so much more. Technology is human knowledge which involves tools, materials and systems. The application of technology results in artifacts or products that advance us as a country. In the world, technology is a tool that is constantly being used throughout society. With its aid, the world has made breakthroughs and discoveries which have brought advancements into the world.

Overall it is difficult for young people to self-discipline, because they still need someone to lead them and teenagers lack good self-control, they are vulnerable to smartphone addiction. With more and more companies knowing this they make everything around us technology friendly and there will always be a better way with the help of technology. In the end, people still need to find another way to reduce the negative effects of cell-phones. Cell phones have become the number one issue in our society. Although cell phones allow us to have a convenient life, it has made our lives more chaotic according to the reasons mentioned above. Technology has the benefits to make our lives better but it can also ruin it if we are not careful. Even though technology has helped people in a lot of ways, a person must realize its drawbacks and balance the use of technology with the physical interaction with others. The balance must be kept for technology to be helpful instead of detrimental. It is important to keep in mind that technology is not always error proof, thus reliability is a relative concept. There are many examples that show how technology has proven to be a negative influence on society, but people still continue its use. Security of personal information is one of the most significant things that a person has, and identity theft or abuse of private information has become widespread. People must become aware of the growing problem and use as much care as possible to protect their well-being and individuality.
