What is cardiovascular training? Cardiovascular training is defined as “physical conditioning that exercises the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels.” Cardiovascular training has many benefits not only to your health but also to your appearance and self-esteem.

There are a few different types of cardiovascular training. The first example being low intensity and long duration. This type of training involves 40 to 60% of your maximum heart rate and is slower and longer lasting more than 40 minutes. Next example is medium intensity and medium duration. This type of training uses approximately 70% of your maximum heart rate and is not as long as the low intensity but still lasts about 20 to 40 minutes. The third example would be high intensity and short duration. This training uses 80 to 85% of your maximum heart rate and lasts a short amount of time, only 5 to 20 minutes. The type you may use depends on your level of previous training as well as what type of results you may be looking for.

Cardiovascular training has many benefits. The main benefits are directed at your overall health. Cardiovascular training is a great way to maintain or even lose weight. Whether you maintain or lose weight depends on the type of training and how often you do it. Another benefit is a lowered risk of disease. People who participate in cardiovascular training have a lower chance of getting Heart disease, High blood pressure, Obesity, Type 2 diabetes, Some types of cancer, or Stroke. Cardiovascular training can also help strengthen your vascular system resulting in your heart and lungs working better and more efficiently. Your bones, tendons, and ligaments are also affected and become stronger and you become at a lower risk of getting osteoporosis.

Cardiovascular training can also benefit your mental health. When participating in cardiovascular training your body can release beta endorphins which gives you a feeling of well-being while also lowering your cortisol levels which reduces stress and anxiety levels. Along with body changes through cardiovascular training people may also begin to see themselves differently. Many times training helps people with body image issues and gives a feeling of confidence and makes people more positive. Another great benefit of cardiovascular training is it can give you more energy. Training can help with stamina resulting in less tiredness when doing physical activities. 

Cardiovascular training has many benefits from physical to mental. I think that everyone should know about all of these benefits and just how easy cardiovascular training is. Doing even the simplest things such as taking a walk, riding a bike, or even going for a swim are all forms of cardiovascular training and can help improve anyone's lifestyle. Not many people would know the answer if they were asked “what is cardiovascular training” and I think that should not be the norm. If people were better informed about these things and had better access to this knowledge it could drastically affect the amount of people with vascular diseases and even improve life expectancies.
