A democratic society can be defined as, “a society that works towards the ideals of a democracy.” In other words, a society in which people have the right to make their own decisions. Being Catholic in a society like this means you have the responsibility to have a Catholic identity and to emulate Christ in all the ways you can. Catholic identity is the way you live out your Catholic faith and how you can adhere your faith to your daily life. Having Christ-like behavior is good in a world where people are free to make their own choices, this helps you and others become closer to God. It is important to stay true to your faith and to remember that God is loving and merciful.

In today's democratic society, it is important to be responsible as a Catholic and to have a Catholic identity. Recently, Catholicism is being greatly judged for its beliefs and morals. This causes people to reject God’s love and turn away from him because of what others think. As a Catholic, it pains me to see faithful people turn away from God because of what others say about him. Being Catholic means accepting everyone, no matter what, this means being kind to all. The word catholic itself means, “universal,” which shows that we as Catholics should positively impact others as much as we can so they can become closer to God and accept his love. Demonstrating Christ-like behavior will influence others in ways that we may not understand. A small gesture can make a person’s day, and it can even inspire others to become closer to God and find refuge in him. At the end of the day having a Catholic identity in a democratic society is incredibly important no matter what others may think.

Since I was younger, it has been rooted in me to help others whenever I can. I try to be selfless and commiserative, for I am fortunate to have what I own. I also always try to care for and thank others for what they do. I have done this in the past when my entire school participated in making bags for nurses who were overworked during the pandemic. I felt proud doing this because these nurses risked their lives helping others during the Covid-19 outbreak. I was pleased that I was able to do something in return for them. These small gestures help me realize how much a small deed can mean to others.

Another time I helped my community was when I volunteered at a food bank farm. This was a few years ago and I was in the 4th grade. I did this with my sister because she needed service hours and I wanted to tag along. We woke up very early in the morning to leave and when we got there we went straight to work. We were assigned with picking onions and putting them in crates. We continued to do this for 2 ½ hours and by the time we finished I was very tired. At that moment, I began to question why I decided to tag along, but that is when I remembered who was going to receive the onions we had just picked. The food at the farm would go to a food bank, where people who needed assistance with obtaining food for themselves and their families would go to. This immediately made me happy and satisfied with my work because I had just helped many people who were probably going through a hard time.
