If a war occured today, it would look much different than the past wars due to the sophistication of technology, science, and the changes in our economy.

A major aspect that has changed since the last world wars is the cyber networking between countries. This could have both positive and negative effects on the way the war would progress. We now have the ability to predict our enemy’s next move due to networking, and technology that allows us to connect with those from across the globe. This would allow us to better combat the other forces, therefore, reducing the risk of extreme collateral damage. In contrast, this also means that there would be a great deal of cyber warfare. A Russian cyberattack on Ukraine is very likely, and it may cause immense damage to vital systems, further slowing Ukraine’s ability to retaliate against Russia. On Thursday afternoon, President Biden stated that the U.S. will launch cyberattacks on Russia, but only if Russia attacks first. This would create a full cyber war between the U.S. and Russia. I believe the U.S. will get heavily involved in this cyber warfare with Russia if they eventually attack Ukraine because of our strength in this area. This could also be an area for other nations to get involved in the war. 

Economic globalization has a lasting impact on our nation, and, in the modern world, countries have learned to depend on each other as a result of trading and the rapid spread of a market based economy. A war would break this chain of trade and service, as well as divide the world economically. Member countries of NATO, including the U.S., may stay connected, but the other countries may have trouble accessing resources efficiently. 

A war today would look much different today compared to those in the past, and we are learning more about how this would play out as the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues.
