Friendship in Charles Dickens's The Great Expectations Essay Example

As Pip grows and develops into a gentleman, he has many vital friendships that have impacts on his future. Contrary to Pip’s steady accumulation of friendship in the first phase of his life, the second phase of his life encompasses the dissipation of his relationships and the persistent scarcity of his once prosperous friendships. “I saw in this a reason for her being beforehand assigned to me. Sending her out to attract and torment and do mischief, Miss Havisham sent her with the malicious assurance that she was beyond the reach of all admirers, and that all that staked upon that cast were secured to lose.” (Dickens, 323) This proves that there’s a nonexist friendship between Pip and Estella. A sense of betrayal towards Pip, as if they got their revenge on men through their torments on Pip. Pip sees Estella differently because of this. All attributed to the dismantling of Miss Havisham’s viewpoint of men because of the rejection of one, who she was planning to marry. Havisham was set on getting and seeking out revenge. Her dress that she always wore, the stopped clocks in her room, the messiness of the room, and the uncleanness of the room all signify the passing of time, along with the effect that this rejection had on her. She manifested her rage on men through the upbringing of Estella, in the hopes of fulfilling the extensive desire of Miss Havisham, but at the cost of Pip's mindset and normality. Furthermore, “As we contemplated the fire, and as I thought what a difficult vision to realize this same capital sometimes was, I put my hands in my pockets. A folded piece of paper in one of them attracting my attention, I opened it and found it to be the playbill I had received from Joe, relative to the celebrated provincial amaterur of Rosccian renown. “And bless my heart,” I involuntarily added aloud, “it’s to-night!” (Dickens, 266) This intensifies Pip's present position of the feeling of worthlessness when in the presence of Estella. In comparative fashion, Herbert is also in love with a girl. He has the intent to marry her but unfortunately can't because of his lack of money. This quote divulges into the bitter side of affection, although love is stereotypically seen as the pinnacle of anyone’s life, can result in emotional trauma lasting for years. Love is a double edged dagger, without that each side is sharp, you will cut yourself. “So, when I had pledged myself to comfort and abet Herbert in the affair of his heart by all practicable and impracticable means, and when Herbert had told me that his affianced already knew me by reputation, and that I should be presented to her, and when we had warmly shaken hands upon our mutual confidence, we blew out our candles, made up our fire, locked our door, and issued forth in quotes of Mr. Wopsle and Denmark.” (Dickens, 266 and 267) This expresses the distinction between Pip and Herbert; unlike most of his interactions, Herbert is not envious of Pip's fortune. Herbert even extends an employment opportunity to Pip. This creates an open chance for more profit, along with the fortune that was provided by Magwitch, the convict. One key point of Pip and Herbert's relationship is the trust in love since Herbert believes Pip should isolate from Estella in light of the fact that he is fixated on her. However, the connection between Mr. Jaggers and Pip is more straightforward. Mr. Jaggers is a cash hungry man who desires a slice of Pip's cash pie, so their relationship is solely about business. The creating association with Herbert causes a huge debilitating effect in Pip and Joe's friendship. It feels like Herbert is more available and his status gives Pip a far better motivation to trust and raise a relationship with him.
