No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark” (Warsan Shire). Looking at the data, the number of people needing help is immense. With all the conflicts and problems around the world, immigrants need help. We should as a country be helping to bring in these immigrants and supporting them when they need it. The USA is a country built of immigrants and our culture revolves around it. Increasing immigration will help raise the economy and help to fill in less popular job vacancies. Looking back at the industrialization period (1880-1920), we saw a major increase in the economy, which was connected back to immigrants coming into America. According to encyclopedia.com during the 1940s, “Unemployment was high and wages were low” (encyclopedia.com). What led to high unemployment rates and a decrease in the economy was not allowing immigrants in during this period, and making laws that restricted access to immigration. This expresses that without opening doors for immigration we are potentially losing workers and decreasing our economy as a whole. Another reason we saw a big increase in the economy was because immigrants coming in from different countries were more willing to do jobs in America since the wages they were being paid were a lot more compared to what they were getting paid in their countries. For example, Ivemsa states that “Production operators in Mexico make about $3.50 (USD) per hour”. This illustrates that people are coming in for more opportunities and better pay rates, which shows that immigrants are willing to work in jobs that are important to the economy. Companies that invest in immigrants will be able to grow as well because when immigrant workers contribute their production and efficiency to a company, it boosts the company's overall production value. The company can reinvest and provide higher wages to workers, which ultimately increases the economy. According to the paper Economics and Emigration: Trillion-Dollar Bills on the Sidewalk? (2011) by Michael Clemens, who works for the Center for Global Development and estimates that GDP ( a measure of economic growth) would double if we opened borders. This is important because this is another piece of evidence that shows opening doors for immigration will help raise the economy. Being open to immigration and being able to invest in immigrants will show America great results such as the economy increasing and the production rates being higher than ever. We have seen a big change in unemployment rates in 2021, and even in 2022. Jobs are requiring more employees, especially in industries like cleaning, janitorial, garbage collection, and jobs that people normally don’t want to do. How do we solve this problem? The answer is pretty simple: it's through allowing immigration and bringing in more immigrants. According to the new American economy, “Immigrant workers are more likely to work as maids and housekeeping cleaners than the native-born” (new American economy). This shows that immigrants are more likely to take on jobs in the accommodation industry, a field that desperately needs employees. One of the charts also shows data that the five total jobs, which are (Maids and housekeeping, janitors, lodging, cooks, and cafeteria attendants) are some of the jobs that immigrants have shown the most representation. The data also shows that out of the 5 jobs, 58.9 percent of immigrants do those jobs, and only 42 percent work in those industries that are native-born. This data helps us to visualize and conclude that immigrants are willing to take on jobs that natives are not, which goes to show once again, that opening the doors for immigration will help to fill in job vacancies in less popular industries. Furthermore, one of the DoubleTree Hotel managers, Cynthia Fresquez stated that “Only about 10 percent of the DoubleTree's 105 employees are immigrants. but most local hotels employ a lot more foreign-born labor in their housekeeping departments” ( Hotelonline). This clearly shows that immigrants are more likely to work in these departments, and Cynthia Fresquez also supports this claim, who has seen many immigrants herself. Additionally, she also claims that “I would say easily 50 percent of that industry workforce is immigrant," Fresquez said. "They're the hardest workers. We always say, without that housekeeping staff, our businesses can't operate." This captures that immigrants are hard workers and they are providing benefits to the companies, which shows that the immigrants are wanting to work there because they truly feel like contributing and helping the companies with work most people don’t wanna do. Opening doors for immigration will help lead America in the right direction and can solve the problem of less popular jobs having such high unemployment rates. Immigrants are looking for jobs and better opportunities. We should be letting in those who want to support the American economy and work in less popular jobs. Being open to immigration will help increase the American economy and build establishments for jobs that most people don’t wanna work at. Immigration is important and needed for our country, to be more diversified and successful; we are going to need people who wanna work hard and can provide benefits to the country. The pros of immigration significantly outweigh the cons and with all the supporting evidence/data we should continue to support immigration and open doors for those who need it.
