Love: A Blessing and a Curse in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (Free Essay Example)

In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet love is a curse but in reality, love is a blessing in which people happily spend the rest of their lives together. There is a massive void in the question of whether love is a blessing or a curse, it relates to the person in question, and there will be vastly different answers involving a lot of bias and prior experiences. In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare love is a curse in which Romeo and Juliet love each other but leave behind a path of heartbreak and devastation. Love is a blessing in which two people are wedded and they spend the rest of their lives together, but others might argue love is a curse as in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet love is a curse by means of death and destruction. 

First, love is a blessing to be together and never be alone. Such as in the balcony scene from the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet “o Romeo Romeo wherefore art thou Romeo deny thy father and refuse thy name or if thou wilt not be but sworn my love and I'll no longer be a Capulet” (Shakespeare, 53). This is Juliet confessing her love for Romeo and she will even go as far as doing away with her beloved Capulet name just to be with him. And that way they are together and will never be lonesome. Furthermore, later in the story the couple Romeo and Juliet finally get to spend the night together, Farewell, farewell one kiss, and I’ll descend (Shakespeare,115). This is Romeo saying goodbye to Juliet and kissing her after they spent the night together and Romeo is descending the balcony. Romeo and Juliet are finally married and not going to be partnerless anymore, and they are going to be together. Thus, Romeo and Juliet are finally wedded together and happy and if all goes well will spend the rest of their lives together. 

In addition, love is a blessing because love makes people blissful and satisfied. Such as in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows” (Shakespeare,41). This is the instant that Romeo first sees Juliet at the Capulet party and instantly comes out from his depression to admire her beauty as he describes her as a “rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear” (Shakespeare,41). And compares her to a “snowy dove trooping with crows” (Shakespeare,41), and in this instance, Romeo is delighted to see Juliet and highly satisfied with her beauty. Moreover, In the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare “in from my lips? O trespass sweetly urged Give me my sin again” (Shakespeare,44). This is Romeo saying that he wants to sin again or kiss Juliet again. In short, Romeo is delighted to have met Juliet so much that his depression was replaced by satisfaction and utter amazement. 

On the contrary, love is also a curse because it can leave people dead or torn apart. Such as in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet “Draw, Benvolio; beat down their weapons. gentlemen, for shame! forbear this outrage Tybalt, Mercutio, the prince expressly hath Forbid this bandying in Verona streets. Hold, Tybalt! good Mercutio” (Shakespeare,88). This is Romeo telling Benvolio to fight Tybalt and telling Mercutio to hold Tybalt as they fight in the street. And from this, it is going to leave behind destruction with Benvolio hurt and Tybalt dead. Next, although love can be a curse it can still be a blessing such as in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet “as rich shall Romeo’s by his lady’s lie, Poor sacrifices of our enmity” (shakespeare,174). What this means is the feud is finally settled although a lot died it was a blessing that the feud finally got settled. In short, their love was a blessing to both families and maybe even more Montagues a Capulets will marry in the future. 

In conclusion, love is a blessing in which people are never lonesome, also it satisfies the need for a human connection, and finally although love is a blessing it can be a curse in which people are left for dead and split in opposite directions. Love will prevail as a blessing as two people are together in harmony, yet in Romeo and Juliet love is a curse in which people are polarized, dead and others left to mourn them. This is important because reality shows that love is a blessing yet from Shakespeare's perspective it sets people apart and causes chaos and suffering which in turn makes it a curse.
